In the classroom
You’ll thrive in our small classes led by dedicated faculty mentors, who will personally guide you through coursework and help you select the right classes, internships, research experiences and other opportunities to reach your career goals.
You will engage in both individual and group labs, gaining a hands-on understanding of the challenges and excitement of the health care field. You'll advance to asking more in-depth questions, constructing and evaluating models and refining skills through self-assessment, ultimately preparing you for advanced work where you take charge of your learning, make strategic decisions in projects and develop a personal code of ethics for your future.
Your coursework will depend on your choice of major. Pre-pharmacy students major in pharmaceutical sciences, pre-physical therapy students major in kinesiology, and students interested in other pre-health tracks typically choose from such majors as biomedical sciences, biology or chemistry.
Beyond the classroom
While your grades and entrance exam scores are an important factor in professional school admissions, other experiences will help you stand out. You might work as a paid lab assistant or tutor or help mentor and inspire young women and middle or high school girls to explore STEM. You may also participate in faculty-student research.
You’ll intern for at least one semester, giving you a valuable opportunity to build your resume while getting hands-on experience. Alverno's internship program gives you opportunities such as working alongside and mentorship from a professor at an area professional school, a physician at a clinic or a lead researcher at a medically oriented laboratory.
