Art Education /
Are you looking for a future full of creativity, purpose and service to others? Alverno’s art education/art therapy program — the only undergraduate dual major of its kind in Wisconsin — focuses on educational and therapeutic approaches to art-making. Our program will prepare you to help people explore their creativity and sense of self while developing their artistic talents.
In the classroom
In this major, you will learn the media and methods to help others develop their artistic talents while exploring ways to adapt your instruction and assessment for a variety of learners in the elementary, middle and high school settings.
Our dual major curriculum focuses on the theory and foundational frameworks of art education and art therapy, including studio art, art history, liberal arts, art education, media and methods, psychology and education coursework.
You’ll thrive in small classes led by dedicated faculty mentors who have deep experience in art education and therapy. We curate learning to meet your individual needs, connect you with people in the field and help you set personal goals. You are not just a student to us — you are the future of art education and therapy and a lifetime member of our community.
Beyond the classroom
Starting in your first year, you will participate in art education/art therapy field studies, working with PreK-12th grade students in addition to learning how to teach and adapt art for adults. Alverno maintains ties with numerous agencies, organizations and schools to provide a wide range of field experience opportunities.
These field experiences connect you to artists, teachers and practitioners working in the field, expanding your learning in the areas of pedagogy, adaptive art processes and the implementation of art programs in diverse communities and settings.
