How long does it take to complete the DEMSN?

The DEMSN 9-Semester Track at our Milwaukee location takes nine semesters (about two and a half years) to complete.

The Accelerated DEMSN 5-Semester Track at our Mesa and Milwaukee locations take five semesters (about 18-20 months, depending on when you start your program).

The DEMSN 9-Semester Track and the DEMSN 5-Semester Track require completion of the same 77 credits of coursework.

What kind of clinical experience will I complete?

All DEMSN students gain clinical experience caring for clients in a variety of clinical settings, including but not limited to long-term care facilities, hospitals and community settings.

What can I do after graduation?

Graduates of our DEMSN program are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) and transition to the professional nurse role wherever newly graduated RNs are employed. After gaining sufficient work experience as an RN, DEMSN graduates are eligible to pursue admission to a post-MSN certificate advanced practice nursing program or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Leadership program.

Alverno currently offers a number of post-MSN advanced practice certificate programs:

  • Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
  • Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner
  • Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

Alverno also offers a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program.

Is financial aid available?

Financial aid is available to those who apply and qualify. Graduate students can qualify for federal loans. We suggest that all students begin the Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA) as soon as they apply. Alverno’s FAFSA code is 003832.
