First Year Experience

Starting Alverno Strong

Alverno's First-Year Experience (FYE) is designed to support both first-time college students and transfer students as they transition into the Alverno community. Through orientation programs, academic support, peer connections and engaging learning experiences, you'll gain the tools, confidence and relationships needed to thrive during your first year and beyond.

Think of the First-Year Experience as your roadmap to success, helping you build academic confidence, meaningful connections and a strong sense of belonging from day one.

New Student Orientation (NSO)

Orientation is the first step in your Alverno journey. Throughout the summer, new students can choose from several orientation sessions designed to help them prepare for the start of classes.

During orientation, you'll:

  • Register for courses
  • Learn about financial aid and student resources
  • Set up and test your technology and account access
  • Meet faculty, staff and fellow students
  • Become familiar with campus services and expectations

Attendance at an orientation session is required for all new students.

Welcome Days

Welcome Days officially welcome you to the Alverno community before classes begin.

During this exciting introduction to campus life, you'll:

  • Learn about Alverno traditions and culture
  • Connect with faculty, staff and fellow students
  • Explore campus resources and opportunities
  • Begin building friendships and support networks

Student mentors are available throughout Welcome Days to answer questions, offer guidance, and help you feel at home as you settle into college life.

First Semester Seminar

The First Semester Seminar (FSS) connects you with a small cohort of fellow first-year students as you begin your academic journey.

Through discussion, reflection, and collaborative learning experiences, you'll explore Alverno's distinctive Ability-based learning approach while developing skills that support academic and personal success.

Each seminar is taught by a faculty member and supported by a Peer Leader who helps foster connection, engagement and a sense of community throughout the year.

Transfer Student Experience

Transferring to a new college comes with unique opportunities and challenges. Alverno's Transfer Student Experience is designed to help you make a smooth transition and feel connected from the start.

Transfer students receive dedicated support from Peer Leaders and campus staff who can help you navigate Alverno's learning environment, understand the Alverno's 8 Abilities and connect with resources that support your success.

Engagement & Success Checklist

Your first year is about more than attending classes. It's also about getting involved, making connections and discovering what makes Alverno unique.

The Student Engagement and Success Checklist encourages new students to explore campus life through activities and experiences that promote connection and belonging. Students can participate by completing milestones such as:

  • Attending campus events
  • Meeting new people
  • Exploring campus resources
  • Participating in traditions and community activities

As students complete checklist items, they can earn prizes, badges, and certificates recognizing their involvement and engagement. Participation is voluntary and begins during the first semester.
