College students will spend the day volunteering throughout Milwaukee

A day in the park for a group of Alverno students actually means getting to work! They’ll be volunteering at the Urban Ecology Center in Washington Park to help restore and preserve natural habitats, pull weeds and do some landscaping. It’s all part of Alverno’s 18th annual Community Day, a day set aside for service. About 40 Alverno College students, faculty and staff will be rolling up their sleeves at the Urban Ecology Center. In all, almost 500 members of the Alverno community will volunteer at nearly two dozen sites across southeastern Wisconsin including Hunger Task Force Farm, South Shore Beach, Stepping Stones Farms and the Salvation Army.

During Community Day, classes are cancelled until 4 p.m. so that students, faculty and staff can participate. Last year Community Day volunteers collected 45 bags of garbage at three locations, made 35 blankets for the Benedict Center, planted over 1,000 plants at the Urban Ecology Center, made 45 bowls for the Empty Bowls project, and harvested 8,000 pounds of squash at Hunger Task Force Farm.
