College students spent the day volunteering throughout Milwaukee
Community Day, Alverno's annual day of service, was held on October 3. In all, nearly 500 students, faculty and staff volunteered at almost two dozen sites across southeastern Wisconsin including Hunger Task Force Farm, South Shore Beach, Stepping Stones Farms, the Urban Ecology Center and the Salvation Army.
During Community Day, classes are cancelled until 4 p.m. so that students, faculty and staff can participate. This was the 18th annual Community Day, and volunteers collected 39 bags of garbage at two locations, made 28 blankets for the Sojourner Truth House, made 50 bowls for the Empty Bowls project, and harvested 300 pounds of broccoli and 5,000 pounds of cabbage at Hunger Task Force Farm.
Since Community Day's inception, over 7,020 students, faculty and staff have volunteered more than 21,060 hours in the Milwaukee community at various locations on this annual day of service. Service to the community is one of the cornerstones of an Alverno education, and Community Day offers students the opportunity to give back while also having a positive impact on the community.
