Alverno will host workshop on freedom of speech

Alverno College will host a workshop exploring freedom of speech and the right to protest.

The day will begin with a panel discussion with advocates who are working on these issues around the world. Several concurrent sessions exploring immigrant and refugee perspectives, students’ rights to protest and strategies for civil discourse and free speech in the classroom will follow. This exploration of First Amendment rights is geared toward K-12 educators, but all educators are welcome.

Panelists include:

  • Maina Kiai, former United Nations special rapporteur for Freedom of Assembly and Association
  • Dina Meza, independent journalist and defender of freedom of expression (simultaneous translation provided)
  • Timothy Shiell, free speech scholar and activist, University of Wisconsin – Stout
  • Douglas Savage, moderator, director of the Institute of World Affairs, University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee

The free online workshop will take place on Thursday, Aug. 5 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. The registration deadline is Aug. 2. For more details and to register visit alverno.edu/civil.
