Alverno College Year in Review, 2020

Despite being a year full of unprecedented challenges, 2020 also had its share of good news to celebrate. From new programs and partnerships to an exciting new facility, these are some of Alverno’s biggest stories from 2020:

Joseph Foy, who came to Alverno from Marian University, was named the vice president for Academic Affairs. Read more

Alverno launched two new Master of Science in Nursing programs — a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner program and a Dual Adult-Gerontology Primary and Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program — both designed to educate nurse practitioners who will serve vulnerable populations. Both programs are the first of their kind in Wisconsin and advance the work of the college’s strategic plan. Read more

Alverno College partnered with The Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee (HPGM) to launch a matching scholarship awards program that will support the education and retention of Hispanic students. Read more

Alverno launched a new substance abuse counseling certificate program, responding to a critical need in the Milwaukee area. Students who successfully complete the program will have the academic requirements to apply for state substance abuse counselor licensure with the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services. Alverno Accelerate, launched in May, is an accelerated, affordable and flexible pathway to earning a bachelor's degree in three or fewer years. Designed for working adults who may be juggling a family and a career, the program is open to women and men and is offered completely online. Read more

Students seeking to transfer credits from any of Wisconsin’s 16 technical colleges to Alverno College will have a much easier time thanks to a historic, comprehensive agreement between the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities and the Wisconsin Technical College System. Alverno College welcomed Magda Hoffman as director of human resources. Read more

Alverno College and the A. O. Smith Foundation are partnering to construct a greenhouse on campus which will feature an aquaponics system and a classroom space. The 1,400 –square-foot facility will offer students an exciting new opportunity to engage in hands-on learning and explore new career paths. Read more

U.S. News & World Report named Alverno College the Midwest’s top university for its strong commitment to teaching, and named it the most innovative school in Wisconsin. The publication’s 2021 America’s Best Colleges guidebook also recognized Alverno for its value, ethnic diversity, economic diversity, social mobility and first-year student experience. Read more

Katari Key, who came to Alverno from Morehouse College, was named director of athletics. Read more

The Thea Bowman Institute for Excellence and Leadership, a program designed to serve Black women through academic and leadership programming, launched this fall. In addition to a full scholarship, students are provided with a dedicated advisor, alumnae mentors, exclusive networking opportunities and guaranteed internship opportunities. Read more

Alverno College was awarded a prestigious Title III grant from the U.S. Department of Education to support student retention and to develop three new health care programs for in-demand fields. Read more
