Are you interested in animals, plants, humans and their interaction with the surrounding world? Then consider majoring in biology, the study of life. As an Alverno biology major, you’ll explore our diverse world and focus your studies on the topics and career paths that interest you. You’ll also develop the crucial skills (like analysis, communication and problem solving) that will get you ready for your next step, whether that’s graduate school or entering the workforce.
The Alverno difference
Alverno College is small by design. We provide individual attention and personalized feedback. You’ll form close connections with STEM faculty and classmates, who will encourage and challenge you to learn and grow.
We know that women have historically been under-represented in STEM. That’s why our curriculum is specifically designed to help you build confidence and achieve success as a STEM leader. You will gain professional experience in and outside of the classroom, including completing at least one internship. On campus, you can work as a paid lab assistant or tutor, or you can help mentor and inspire young women in middle school or high school to explore STEM. Off campus, you can share your research at conferences and attend local professional seminars and meetings. And there are many opportunities for students to participate in faculty-student research projects.
As an Alverno biology student, you will learn to:
Explain information in biology and show the limitations of science
How to use research, mathematical and computer skills in biological data gathering and analysis
Design, conduct and effectively talk about biological experiments
Apply knowledge of biology in an ethical manner to environmental and societal issues
Work as a professional in the community
“Alverno faculty are very hands-on and motivating. The professors want you to succeed and offer the tools for you to do so. Completing the required internship, internship class, Career Studio and 8 Abilities all helps students gain experience in their field and is important, especially with STEM, because employers want to see you gained skills beyond the classroom. Alverno’s reputation also aids in internship and career opportunities. My two internship sites were pleased to have me because they’ve had Alverno students before and love to work with us.”
