Biology
STEM | Major
The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the awe-inspiring potential of science: When the world faces a new problem, it turns to scientists for answers and innovative solutions. Biologists deliver.
As an Alverno biology major, you’ll develop the knowledge and scientific tools to better understand plants, animals, humans and their interaction with the world — then use that understanding to make a difference. You might study animal behavior in the wild, gather field samples to analyze the effects of climate change on ecosystems, or help develop new medicines in a lab. And in this ever-changing and advancing field, you’ll never run out of new questions to explore.
It’s also a field with strong job prospects and higher-than-average salaries. Biologists are in demand by employers ranging from pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to government agencies to university research labs. This major is an excellent foundation if you have your eye on medical, veterinary or graduate school.
The Alverno difference
We create women leaders who are ready to succeed and shatter ceilings in traditionally male-dominated STEM fields. At Alverno, you’ll find an empowering, supportive environment that helps you achieve your best. Instead of letter grades, we focus on your personal development and real-world skills — equipping you with the crucial communication, critical thinking and problem-solving skills you need to thrive as a scientist.
Alverno’s STEM majors aren't isolated in their own departments the way they are at many colleges. Our small class sizes help you really get to know your professors, who will personally guide you through rigorous coursework and help you select the right classes, internships, research experiences and other opportunities to reach your career goals.
Outside of class, you might work as a paid lab assistant or tutor in the Daniel M. Soref Science and Mathematics Resource Center, mentor students through Alverno’s Girls’ Academy of Science & Mathematics, or participate in faculty-student research through the Center for Academic Excellence.
"Alverno faculty are very hands-on and motivating. The professors want you to succeed and offer the tools for you to do so. Alverno’s reputation also aids in internship and career opportunities. My two internship sites were pleased to have me because they’ve had Alverno students before and love to work with us."
— Amorina, biology major
Coursework
All Alverno students must complete 120 credits to earn a bachelor’s degree. You’ll begin your biology courses during your first semester, as well as your general education requirements. You’ll study chemistry of bioorganic molecules, biology of plants and animals, human anatomy and physiology, microbiology, ecology, cellular biology, genetics and physics.
Field education
You’ll intern for at least one semester, giving you a valuable opportunity to build your resume while getting hands-on experience applying the skills and knowledge you’ll learn in the classroom. Past biology majors have interned at Oceans of Fun at the Milwaukee County Zoo, as well as at the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Summer Program for Undergraduate Research, Program for Undergraduate Research Experience and Genetic Counseling Program. Alverno’s Career Studio, which is connected to more than 2,000 partner sites, can help you find the right internship for you.
Career opportunities
Many Alverno biology graduates go on to medical, dental, veterinary and graduate school, while others begin their careers right away. This major could prepare you for work as a laboratory technician, field ecologist, wildlife biologist, conservation officer, zookeeper, food scientist, bioengineer and more.
