Measurement and Evaluation Certificate

Measurement & Evaluation Certificate

What gets measured gets done.

Organizations know that it is important to track the need for change and track the effect of change. However, most people have little training in the skills that make measurement reliable and valid, and therefore may be making expensive decisions based on faulty data.

Alverno’s Certificate in Measurement and Evaluation is designed for working adults in business, healthcare, or education who need to accurately measure such things as client or employee attitudes, learning, or behaviors. Students will learn theoretical and practical considerations for developing valid measurement and evaluation plans, practice with specific techniques including surveys, interviews, and experiments, and practice communicating what can be reliably inferred from good measurement. You’ll learn to build your own measurement tools as well as evaluate consultant-provided tools. You’ll learn how to avoid common errors that can lead to costly mistakes.

The Certificate is perfect for those working in market research, user experience design, customer satisfaction, employee relations, program evaluation, grant writing or compliance.

We’ll help you answer the questions, “How do I know that the product, program, or policy I have implemented is having the desired effect?” and “How can I demonstrate to others that our product, program or policy has the desired effect?”.

It’s easy to say that you’re “evidence-based,” but it’s worth this extra effort to produce evidence that gives you a solid basis for your decisions and actions.

LEARNING CONTENT

The Measurement & Evaluation certificate includes the following modules:

1. Principles of measurement
2. Principles of evaluation
3. Surveys
4. Interviews and Focus Groups
5. Experiments and A/B tests
6. Using existing measures

Modules consist of online content, activities, small developmental assignments and more substantive assessments.

HOW IT WORKS

Work at a pace that fits your schedule! Each module is asynchronous and self-paced, and could take as little as just 1 - 2 hours to complete.

After completing modules 1 and 2, a student can choose any of the remaining modules, or complete all for the full certificate.

Alverno College is a leader in outcomes-based education and highly-individualized learner feedback. You’ll receive personal attention – including evaluation and developmental feedback – from faculty who have decades of experience promoting student learning of difficult material, including these very topics.

Your instructors:
Kris Vasquez, PhD
Paul Smith, PhD

Outcomes: After completing the certificate program, a student will be able to:

1. Explain the characteristics of reliable and valid measurement
2. Analyze popular measurement instruments from a cost/benefit perspective
3. Clearly present results of original measurement work
4. Analyze the advantages and disadvantages of various measurement approaches for particular organizational questions.
5. Conduct methodologically sound surveys, interviews, observations, and/or experiments
6. Explain the limitations of conclusions that can be drawn from even solid research
7. Reflect on ethical considerations in research
