Short term study abroad provides you with an easy way to obtain course credit while broadening your global perspective. Short Term Study Abroad (STSA) opportunities are available through Alverno as course offerings per semester. Courses begin with in-class study in preparation for a 10-14 day trip abroad. Courses offered vary from semester to semester.
While STSA options vary, the following trips have been offered fairly consistently. Please inquire within the IIC to receive the most accurate STSA course offerings.
Italy
Course Title: GEC 333/INS 305 Arts & Cultures Europe: Italy
Instructors: Dan Leister (daniel.leister@alverno.edu) and Eileen Booth (eileen.booth@alverno.edu)
Course Description: Truly a cultural feast for the soul, this course will engage you in the art and culture of Italy. We will follow Caesar's footsteps through ancient Rome, demystify the history, allegory, techniques of Renaissance art, walk along cobblestone streets into breath-taking cathedrals, engage in hands-on art projects and learn how to prepare Italian cuisine. Through visiting and studying in three cities, this trip to Italy offers you an experience of a lifetime. Medieval-walled cities of Italy will embrace you in the birthplace of the Renaissance. Linked with the history of humanity, Rome served as a capital of an empire which dominated the Mediterranean world for centuries. It thereafter became the spiritual capital of the Christian world. Florence, the symbol of the Renaissance, rose to economic and cultural power under the Medici in the 15th and 16th centuries. Assisi, a medieval city built on a hill, is the birthplace of St. Francis and closely associated with the work of the Franciscan Order that focuses on the universal message of peace and tolerance to all religions and beliefs.

Jamaica
Course Title: GEC 330 Cultural Perspectives in Health Care: Jamaica
Instructors: Luanne Wielichowski (luanne.wielichowski@alverno.edu)
Course Description: Through in-depth study of the Jamaican culture, the student gains experience in assessing cultural health-care practices, shared belief systems, and norms. She experiences the relationship between culture and health and begins to expand her cultural competence abilities to enhance her practice of professional nursing. The course concludes with an immersion experience (approximately 10-14 days), during which she observes health-care delivery systems operating in acute, clinic, and community care sites. She participates in care and determines the impact of the host culture's health-care delivery system in meeting people's needs within the cachement/service area.

China
Course Title: INS 308/INS 402 Art & Religion of Asia: China
Instructors: Dan Leister (daniel.leister@alverno.edu) and Eileen Booth (eileen.booth@alverno.edu)
Course Description: This course gives you the opportunity to explore the ways in which art and religion function to create a meaningful way of life for people in Asian cultures. Through travel and in-class learning opportunities, you will engage in activities that will familiarize yourself with contemporary and historical, artistic and religious expressions of China. Your awareness and understanding of the interplay between the functions of art and religion in your own and other non-Asian cultures will be enhanced. You will explore selected Asian arts and religions through analysis of texts, videos, music, visual arts/architecture, and through attendance at art and religious events. Through interaction with visiting speakers and/or performers at home and abroad, you will have the opportunity to expand your global perspective regarding multiple interpretations of the interplay of art and religion.

Ireland
Course Title: INS 410/INS 445/GEC 335/COMM 400 International Communication: People, History, and Culture of Ireland
Instructors: Jill Moore (jill.moore@alverno.edu) and Sue DaBaco (sue.dabaco@alverno.edu)
Course Description: On campus, students will be introduced to cross-cultural communication, the conflicts in Ireland, linguistic and psychological process of enemy-making, and theories of conflict and mediation. In-country, students will attend lectures on Irish history from both Protestant and Catholic activists, take walking tours of major sites of conflicts, and learn about current strategies for building understanding and teaching peace.

Japan
Course Title: N 393 Cultural Perspectives in Health Care: Japan
Instructors: Judeen Schulte (judeen.schulte@alverno.edu) and Valli Sternig
Course Description: Using cultural competence frameworks, you will explore the traditional health care beliefs, practices, and philosophical perspectives of the Japanese culture. During the travel in this course, you will interact with health care professionals in acute care and community agencies to observe the practices of the health care system in Japan. Participation in culturally-based observational experiences in health care settings in Japan will occur in conjunction with Tokyo Women's Medical University.
