Jennifer Flamboe is an associate professor of World Languages at Alverno College, where she has taught since 2007. She also serves as the director of the Spanish/English Interpretation program and the Spanish Language and Cultures program at the college, and is involved in Alverno’s Hispanic Serving Institution committee. She teaches several courses including cultural competence in healthcare, advanced interpreting practice, ethics in healthcare interpretation, written translation skills for healthcare interpreters, Spanish language, advanced Spanish grammar, healthcare interpreter internship and general internship seminars, and has led short-term study abroad trips to Ecuador. Prior to coming to Alverno, Flamboe worked as an English teacher in Ecuador, working with school-aged students as well as adults, and she coordinated an outreach initiative in early literacy within the Latino community for the Milwaukee Public Library.
In addition to teaching at Alverno, Flamboe is a nationally certified healthcare interpreter. She also owns and operates Equalingua LLC which offers English/Spanish translation, interpreting, language instruction and consulting. Some of the projects she has worked on include translating birth, marriage and divorce certificates, research protocols, transcribing and subtitling audio recordings, interpreting for medical and worker's compensation appointments and education meetings, and presenting insurance and benefits information for Spanish-speaking audiences. She also serves as a translation specialist at Children’s Wisconsin, where she coordinates written translation projects for the entire Children’s Hospital and Health System (CHHS). In the past Flamboe worked as an interpreter for Columbia Center, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, Aurora Healthcare and ProHealth Care interpreting for patients and their families in a number of inpatient and outpatient situations.
Flamboe earned her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from the University of Wisconsin, and her Master of Arts in Foreign Language and Literature from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. She also holds numerous certificates, including Spanish Medical Interpreter and Spanish Proficiency. She is a member of the Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee, the Wisconsin Association of Foreign Language Teachers, the International Medical Interpreters Association, the National Council on Interpreting in Healthcare, the Midwest Association of Interpreters and Translators, The Wisconsin Interpreter and Translator Association, and the American Translator’s Association.
