BIOGRAPHY
Andrea Skyberg is an assistant professor and director of the Art Education/Art Therapy program at Alverno College. She is also the assessment coordinator for the Art department. In her role at the college, Skyberg helps to create new arts courses, and teaches courses in studio arts and art education. Skyberg collaborates with faculty across campus on initiatives that drive practices of experiential learning, creative integration and community engagement and activism.
Skyberg’s career as an author and illustrator led her to visit schools as a guest author/artist. During this time she visited over 60 schools teaching art and writing workshops to over 15,000 children in primary and intermediate levels. In addition, she worked in over 20 schools on long-term residencies, collaborating with staff and students to create large-scale projects, and led a number of professional development sessions on arts integration for staff. This eventually led to her teaching middle and high school art for five years before she began her role at Alverno. To find out more visit https://andreaskyberg.com/.
Skyberg received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art, before earning a Fulbright Fellowship to work in Nigeria with the organization Girls Power Initiative. Following her work in West Africa, she continued her education at the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee (UWM), earning a Master Fine Arts in Fiber Art with a Master Certificate in Museum Studies. She worked as the curator and manager of the Union Art Gallery at UWM, before transitioning into a career of writing and illustrating children’s books. Five of those books are award-winning picture books. She served as the Wisconsin regional advisor for The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) for four years, managing over four-hundred members and planning the annual state conference.
