Alverno College Honors Four for Outstanding Philanthropy

November 5, 2019

Alverno College will honor two alumnae and two friends of the college for their philanthropic contributions to Alverno and the community during the college's Celebration of Giving event Nov. 8. The annual event is a recognition of those who have generously given their time and financial support to the college. Students who have received scholarships will have the opportunity to meet and personally thank their benefactors. Because the event takes place on First-Generation College Student Day, a panel of first-generation students will also share their experiences.

Patricia Wilde '61, of Wisconsin Dells, Wis., will receive the Bene Award, given to individuals and organizations who have demonstrated exemplary commitment to Alverno through gift support of the college's programs, operations and capital endeavors. She has been a staunch Alverno supporter for nearly 50 years, and she served as president of the Alumnae Association Board. Her support of Alverno's largest capital campaign and other renovation projects helped Alverno build state-of-the-art facilities, while her support of scholarships has provided students with much-needed tuition assistance.

Carol Dolphin '62, of Waukesha, Wis., will receive the Golden Jubilarian Award, awarded to an alumna celebrating more than 50 years as an Alverno graduate and who has been committed to philanthropy and service throughout her life. Dolphin is known as an actor and director in theatres throughout Milwaukee and Waukesha counties, and has performed internationally as a professional storyteller. She served as the college's first lay alumnae director and president of the Alumnae Association Board. She also provides scholarship support for arts and communications majors.

Gary and Joanne Grunau are the recipients of the Ambassador Award, which is bestowed upon an alumna or friend who has given time and talents in support of the college and has demonstrated distinguished service. Pillars of the Milwaukee community, Joanne is involved in numerous local organizations, and Gary was instrumental in some of the region's most innovative urban development projects. Passionate advocates for Alverno, Gary Grunau served on the Board of Trustees beginning in 1983 and was integral in bringing athletics to Alverno. Joanne previously served as the vice president for Advancement at Alverno. The Grunaus were leadership supporters of Alverno's largest capital campaign and strong supporters of student scholarships. Their generous investment of time and energy has impacted many over the years. Gary passed away in September, but his support of students and deep expertise on multiple campus construction and development projects have left an indelible mark on the college.
