The Power of Persistence: My Journey as a First-Generation Student

To celebrate First-Gen Week, we asked students to share their first-gen stories. Lizbeth Cruz is currently a senior majoring in Business & Management, with a minor in Media Design. She is also serving as the president of First@Alverno, a student organization for first-gen students, and is graduating in December 2025.

Growing up, I quickly realized that education is more than just attending school. It is an opportunity that not everyone receives. As a first-generation student, I have always viewed learning as a privilege. My journey has not been easy, but every challenge has shaped me into a stronger, more determined individual. I learned progress only happens when you push forward.

The high school I attended was very small. I still remember my first semester, sitting in my Spanish class while my teacher emphasized the importance of doing well in school, because every grade counts. It was during the college admissions season, and I watched the seniors go into a room for their admission interviews. My teacher told us, “Remember to do your best so you can end up like that in your senior year,” as students left the room holding college pennants. That moment stuck with me and became one of my biggest motivations to work hard throughout high school.

I excelled in every course and always strived to do my best. I understood that to attend college without financial burdens, I needed to earn good grades and participate in extracurricular activities. I joined the student government, the Girls Academy of Science and Mathematics at Alverno College, and the Boys and Girls Club, where I was paired with a mentor throughout my four years of high school. Each of these experiences helped me grow as a person. My high school played a major role in my decision to pursue higher education, and I will always be grateful for the support and guidance I received there.

I had always known that I wanted to attend Alverno College. I had heard nothing but great things from alumni, and I was drawn to the small, supportive environment. Being part of the Girls Academy program during my junior and senior years also influenced my decision. Thankfully, I received enough scholarships so I wouldn't have to worry about the cost.

Starting college was both exciting and intimidating, as I was going alone and I decided to commute. However, I was determined not to let that stop me from building connections and getting involved. During my first semester, I attended club meetings and campus events, talked to my classmates, and worked on campus. Alverno has opportunities to interact with students through its small classes and welcoming atmosphere.

Throughout my time at Alverno, I developed important skills through my work experiences and leadership opportunities, especially as the president of First@Alverno, a student organization for first-generation students. Being able to interact with other first-generation students has been one of the most rewarding parts of my college journey. Hearing about different experiences and perspectives, and being able to share advice based on my own, has been an honor.

My advice for any first-generation student is simple: go for it. Pursue what your heart tells you to do and never give up. There will always be challenges, but there will also always be someone willing to help if you need that extra push.

Education has opened many doors for me, and I am grateful every day for the opportunities I have had. Being a first-generation student is not easy, but it is an experience filled with growth and purpose.
