Get expert advice on finding truthful reporting

In today's social media landscape, people are quick to share information without checking their sources. Cable channels and various publications and websites present skewed representations of the truth as fact. Consumers often take it for granted that what they're reading and hearing is factual without vetting the source. So how do you wade through all the messages bombarding you to get to the truth?

The League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County and WUWM are teaming up with the Alverno College Women's and Gender Studies program to present Truth, Trust and Democracy, a discussion exploring the challenges facing all of us as we seek truthful and accurate reporting. Attendees will get expert advice on how to be more savvy consumers of news and better-informed voters. The distinguished panelists include:

  • Young Mie Kim, professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and faculty affiliate of the Department of Political Science at UW-Madison
  • Amy Waldman, journalist and librarian at Mill Road Library
  • Ashley Luthern, reporter at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
  • Amy Shapiro, professor of Philosophy and director of the of the Women's and Gender Studies program at Alverno College
  • Jon Meecham, Pulitzer Prize-winning presidential historian and best-selling author (via pre-recorded audio interview conducted exclusively for this event)
  • Bonnie North, co-host and producer of WUWM's Lake Effect will serve as moderator

The panel discussion will take place on Saturday, October 20 in the Wehr Auditorium in Christopher Hall at Alverno College. The program is from 10:15 a.m. - noon, and is free to attend.
