In support of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program
In November 2016, Alverno President Andrea Lee, IHM, joined more than 600 public and private college and university leaders in signing a statement supporting the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. In January 2017, President Lee repledged her commitment to DACA students and to undocumented immigrant students.
Today we received the distressing news that President Trump has officially called for an end to DACA, leaving a small window of opportunity for positive legislative action during the next six months.
As a Catholic, Franciscan institution, Alverno reaffirms its commitment to serve and support our DACA students, believing as we do in their inherent worth and dignity as human persons and anticipating their contributions to our community, to our country and to our world. This belief and commitment is strong and will not be eroded.
We will hold our lawmakers accountable to do what is right and just for these students, many of whom have known life only in the United States. Among these DACA students are future educators, business leaders, entrepreneurs, artists and health care professionals. They seek only to improve their own lives and those of their families and to contribute positively to our communities and nation.
As we stand with our colleagues and people of goodwill across our country, Alverno College remains steadfastly fixed on this critical goal: to educate students to seek a more just world and to act thoughtfully and relentlessly in pursuit of it.
