In response to the CDC’s recommendations for social distancing and Governor Tony Ever’s ban on gatherings of more than 50 people, the 2020 Character Education Conference,
originally scheduled for June 17, 2020 at Alverno College, has been canceled. ~ Jeff Weiss, Superintendent, School District of South Milwaukee
Please know that planning for the 2021 Character Education Conference is currently underway. We are grateful to our keynote speakers, Scarlett Lewis and Clifton Taulbert, who have
already confirmed that they will participate in 2021.
Participants that have already paid will be refunded. Dates for 2021 will be announced soon. Thank you for your patience during this difficult and unprecedented time.
Conference participants will have the opportunity to explore the important role that character education and social emotional learning play in improving school culture and academic
achievement. Through keynote presentations, pre-conference workshops, breakout sessions and the resource fair, participants will interact with like-minded colleagues to share and learn
strategies on how to engage their students and help them develop into ethical citizens.

Illuminating Character, June 17, 2020 - Character Education Conference Keynote Speakers
We are excited to announce that Scarlett Lewis and Clifton Taulbert will be the keynote speakers for the 2020 Illuminating Character Conference.
The 16th Annual Character Education Conference will be held on June 17, 2020 at Alverno College in Milwaukee Wisconsin.
Our opening keynote, Scarlett Lewis, is the mother of Jesse Lewis who was killed in his first grade classroom during the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012
along with 19 classmates and 6 teachers and administrators in one of the worst school shootings in US history. She founded of The Jesse Lewis Choose Love Foundation in honor of Jesse and to spread a message he left on their kitchen chalkboard shortly before he died,
Nurturing Healing Love, the formula for choosing love, and to promote social and emotional education in schools as well as a consistent message of compassion in our communities.
Lunch keynote speaker, Clifton Taulbert is a Pulitzer nominated author, entrepreneur and international lecturer defines his life as one benefiting from ordinary people who proudly
displayed their character for him to see—through the unselfishness that fueled and guided their life actions.
Taulbert recalls their lives with great affection because the lit the pathway to his purpose. He would go on to embrace the unselfishness lived out in his presence. Their Eight Habits of the
Heart would become his own. According to Taulbert, "our journey is better served when our lives become the light that shines for others to see and find their way." Audiences around the
world sit on the edge of their seats and rise in thunderous applause as Taulbert, noted author and businessman, transports them to his childhood, engaging them in the stories that are
timeless and universal - ordinary people becoming extraordinary leaders in life.
