Alverno goes test optional

Responding to the shifting landscape caused by COVID-19, Alverno College will adopt a test-optional policy for first-year students applying for Fall 2020, Spring 2021 and Fall 2021 bachelor’s and associate’s degree programs.

The cancellation of ACT and SAT administrations because of COVID-19 has created barriers and unprecedented challenges for students who were scheduled to take or re-take these tests this spring.

For decades, Alverno has taken a holistic approach to admission, looking beyond just test scores to identify students who would thrive in a diverse and unique learning environment.

Going forward, whether a student chooses to submit test scores or not, the Alverno Admissions Team will review each application in context, weighing characteristics that focus on academic accomplishments, including strength and selection of academic coursework, and personal accomplishments, including leadership in extracurricular, community service or work opportunities. The Alverno Admissions Team may also opt to use some campus-based placement tools to help assess skill level in a variety of subjects.

This temporary policy change will be re-evaluated for the future Alverno classes of 2022 and beyond. What won’t change is Alverno’s commitment to accepting a diverse group of students who thrive in an environment that empowers women both academically and personally.

Alverno will continue to award merit-based scholarships based on a student’s grade point average and other academic accomplishments. Need-based aid will not be affected by this decision.

For international students, the ACT and SAT have never been required for admission to Alverno. These students will still be required to take an English proficiency test, such as the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and IELTS (International English Language Testing System).
