Join us for lively evening discussions, free and open to the public, throughout the school year. Topics are selected and led by one of Alverno’s four schools—Arts & Sciences, Business, Education and Nursing—and feature professionals from throughout our community.

ALVERNO INTERNATIONAL NIGHT
A Celebration of Cultures
Thursday, April 4

Join us for a special celebration of international cultures! Alverno College welcomes students from around the world, representing many diverse cultures and ethnic traditions. At this unique event you’ll sample delicious foods, enjoy musical and dance performances, and browse special displays of traditional handicrafts and artworks. And you’ll get to meet and visit with Alverno students who are just waiting to share insights to their cultural backgrounds.

HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE SERVICE
Wednesday, April 10

Join us for this free annual program which pays homage to survivors of the Holocaust and assures that their stories are not forgotten. This year’s guest speaker is Aaron Elster, a child survivor of the Sokolow Ghetto in Poland. Elster has noted, “We are the last of the survivors and we have an obligation to tell the younger generations of the atrocities that humans are able to inflict on others.”

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE
“Communication Across Boundaries”
Wednesday, April 24

Presented by Alverno’s Institute for Educational Outreach and Human Resources Department

Join us for a morning packed with ideas and tools for developing strong working teams and for sharing your ideas both powerfully and professionally. This mini-conference includes continental breakfast, morning keynote, two workshops and a networking lunch.

KEYNOTE: 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.: The Power of Communication

Cleave: to unite or divide. It’s one of those words that has two polar opposite meanings. Whether you are part of team that functions in unity or division, odds are significant what keeps you together or divides you is a pivotal tool called communication.

Whether you are working with a small team or a large organization, communication effectiveness is one of the biggest predictors of success. Join us for our kick-off keynote where we set the stage for:

  • Discovering the many communication differences that strengthen our teams
  • Understanding the importance of building teams centered on unified goals and outcomes
  • Highlighting the tools we can use to be more productive and happy on the job

1) Effective Written Communication: Successful Writing in the Workplace

Whether it’s email, letters, websites or texts, what you write tells a story about you. Spend time learning five tips to more effective written messages. Specifically, we’ll talk about:

  • When to use written communication
  • How to format messages for impact
  • Phrases that clutter your writing
  • Eye appeal
  • Grammar and spelling updates


2) Effective Team Communication: Building Better Relationships, Building More Effective Teams

Laura Dolnik, Leadership & Organizational Development Consultant in the Agencies Department of Northwestern Mutual

Thriving, productive teams are made, not born. In this interactive session we will review the qualities of effective teams, link those traits to a critical communication competency and understand the principles that can help you put that communication competency to work. You will learn to:

  • Earn or increase trust
  • Manage anxiety in tough situations and stay focused
  • Interface more effectively with emotionally charged individuals
  • Respond more positively to criticism
  • Build better relationships and sustain motivation
  • Increase your team’s effectiveness in achieving goals


3) Maximum Impact Design: Effective and Engaging Visual Communication

Dawn Balistreri, Associate Professor of Communication & Technology, Alverno College

Successful visual communication commands attention, conveys information and evokes a response. For maximum impact, presentations and reports should be effective and engaging. Expand your design arsenal and explore new techniques as you learn about:

  • Principles of good design
  • The “Works Every Time” layout
  • Web-based resources such as Prezis, Glogs, and Animoto
