CONFLICT WITHOUT FEAR
Tuesday, April 9
Do you hate dealing with conflict? Can you think of a time (or two) when you wished you would have dealt better with a conflict situation? Most people can answer “yes” to these questions. Conflict is a reality in our lives—at work, with friends, with family—yet most of us don’t deal with it well. In this session, we’ll explore some of the causes of interpersonal conflict, why we avoid conflict and practical ways to deal with conflict for more peaceful and balanced lives. This session is based on the book The Coward’s Guide to Conflict: Empowering Solutions for Those Who Would Rather Run Than Fight, Tim Ursiny, PhD (2003). The book is not a requirement, but may be helpful to those who want to continue working on strengthening their conflict management skills beyond class. It can be purchased on Amazon.com or copies will be available from the instructor for $10.00 each.

KINDNESS IN THE CLASSROOM:
Cross-Curricular Humane Education
2 Wednesdays, February 20 & March 6
This course, offered by the Wisconsin Humane Society, helps professional educators and pre-service teachers incorporate the principles of humane education into the classroom curriculum. Humane education does more than simply teach young people how to care for animals, it incorporates all of the same values—such as respect, responsibility and citizenship—that are stressed in character education. By integrating these concepts into existing curriculum, you will develop strategies to help children foster a respect for all living creatures. You will learn and practice multidisciplinary activities and games, and develop and share standards-based activities that incorporate humane and character education into any classroom. All materials are included.
“Children trained to extend justice, kindness, and mercy to animals become more just, kind and considerate in their relations with one another.” —National PTA Congress 1933
