The exciting stories of enterprising American women journalists and foreign correspondents give us a unique perspective on the past. We’ll make women’s history come alive as we explore the daring adventures of Margaret Fuller (the first female reporter and foreign correspondent in the 1840s), Nelly Bly, Mary Robert Rinehart, Edna Ferber, Sigrid Schultz and Georgie Anne Geyer. You’ll take home a list of books about and by women journalists for you and your book club.

English is a Germanic language, but English—and American language and culture—is entering the German psyche as well. In this exciting class on language and comparative culture, you will learn to read and speak German in an “out of the box" approach: by using the thousands of cognates found in the English language. And because language is the main transmitter of culture, you will also learn about the cultural nuances which will familiarize you even more with German language.

INDIAN CULTURE AND HINDI LANGUAGE

Gain an understanding of the rich and diverse culture of India, with additional exploration of the Hindi language.  You will become familiar with this broad region’s multiple histories, dialects, social and religious traditions, as well as cultural topics such as literature, film, art and music. Learn some of the Devanagari script as you are introduced to Hindi, the official and most prominent language of India.

SPANISH LANGUAGE IN THREE PARTS
Session I:
Spanish Introduction and Vocabulary
Session II: Spanish Grammar
Session III: Spanish Conversation

To speak Spanish, you need three things: know the words that make up the language (the vocabulary); know the rules for putting those words together (the grammar); and you need to practice what you learn from vocabulary and grammar (conversation). In this three-part class you will personalize your learning program; choose one, two or all three parts. By the end of the 12 classes, you’ll have a strong grounding in Spanish language. After that, it will take only practice to become fluent.

WISDOM OF THE EAST:
Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism
6 Tuesdays, April 9 – May 14

In traditional Eastern religions, all persons are understood to be divine. Hence, the key practice is to wake up to the knowledge that we are divine and from that awareness achieve enlightenment. Eastern religions emphasize harmony and oneness and have much to offer those with demanding, hectic lives. In this course you will explore the spiritual wisdom of Buddhism, Taoism and Hinduism. To do so, we will investigate the historical development of each religion, delve into their most important sacred writings and examine their sacred art. We will also examine each religion’s key spiritual practice such as Buddhist meditation, Taoist alchemy and Hindu yoga. Through our study of Eastern religious history, philosophy and spiritual practice, we will be able to integrate the Wisdom of the East into our lives.

The primary Western religions understand God as a knowable being. Therefore, the emphasis is on establishing and maintaining a relationship with Him and from that relationship the believer can achieve salvation. This course will explore the spiritual wisdom of the great monotheistic religions of the West: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. We will investigate the core beliefs, historical development and spiritual practices of each faith tradition. We will also delve into their most important sacred writings and examine their sacred art. Through our study of Western religious history, philosophy and spiritual practice, we will be able to integrate the Wisdom of the West into our lives.
