Roommate
Information
All first-year students entering college within one year of their
graduation, aged 17-20, are required to have a roommate. We know
you'll find that living with a good friend or forming a new relationship
will be a positive and unique experience. If you ask for a specific
roommate on your Housing Contract, well do our best to honor
your request. To accomplish this, both students must request each
other as roommates. If you do not designate a person as your roommate
and you do not qualify to have your own room, the Housing staff
will match you with a roommate based on the housing contract information.
Personalize
Your Room: What to bring and what not to bring
Students are asked to bring the basics: bed linens, blankets, pillows,
towels, hangers, cleaning supplies, a lamp for study, alarm clock,
health essentials and cooking essentials. In addition, you may wish
to personalize your room with plants, posters and pictures from
home. Some students bring wall hangings or carpet pieces. (Rooms
are 10' x 17'; bring carpet for a 10' x 10' space.)
Here's a list
(pdf) of other things you can bring.
Please do not bring microwaves, hotplates, fryers, toasters, toaster
ovens, space heaters, air conditioners, halogen lights, candles,
incense, firearms and pets (except for fish). This is what you can
bring (pdf format).

Safety
and Security
Every attempt is made to provide a safe and secure living environment.
All members of the residential community must share responsibility
for security. Alverno College security officers make regular rounds
through the residence halls. Residents are given an access card
which allows them admission into the buildings. The Austin Hall
reception desk is staffed 24 hours, seven days a week, and the receptionist
monitors those entering the building and facilitates the check-in
policy procedures. Security cameras monitor each of the doors that
lead outside. Students are encouraged to obtain insurance on their
possessions. Clare Desk is staffed from noon to midnight.

Dining
Services
All resident students participate in one of the three meal plan
options offered by Dining Services. All meal plans operate as a
declining balance system, which allow the student maximum flexibility
and convenience. Dining Services provides meal options to meet the
needs of todays college students while giving careful attention
to nutrition, preparation and dining environment. A vegetarian option
and an additional vegan entrée are provided at each meal.
Students are encouraged to bring favorite recipes from home to share
with Dining Services.
The Commons dining area is located in the Liberal
Arts building, just a short walk from the residence halls.
The Pipeline Student Activity Center in Austin Hall
offers an alternative dining area to the Commons. Meals are offered
Sunday through Thursday from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m., plus daytime hours on non-Weekend College weekends.
