Second
Careers in Teaching
Open to men and women
Did you know that Alverno College is internationally renowned for
the way it teaches its students? In fact, Alverno is one of four
colleges nationwide to receive the first ever U. S. Department of
Education Award for Effective Teacher Preparation. The college's
teacher-education program is one of two in the nation cited for
excellence in undergraduate teacher preparation by the National
Commission on Teaching and America's Future.
If you already hold a bachelor's degree and are
interested in becoming licensed as a teacher, we can help. We offer
two distinct programs: a post-baccalaureate licensure program and
a graduate-level licensure to master's program. Both are open to
women and men.
Individualized licensure
programs
Before you apply, submit copies of your undergraduate transcripts
to Alverno's Admissions Office. Alverno's Education Department advisors
will review your previous coursework and match it to current state
licensure requirements. A program is then designed expressly for
you to meet unfulfilled requirements. You'll know before you apply
what you'll need to take and when you'll take it. At that point,
for the post-baccalaureate licensure program, you will complete
a paper application (The online application is not appropriate for
this program.)
Post-baccalaureate Licensure
Program
For
women and men who already have their bachelor's degree, we offer
a flexible program with convenient hours and a discounted part-time
tuition. The post-baccalaureate teacher-education program includes
early childhood/elementary, elementary/middle, and middle/secondary
education. Alverno offers a wide range of options in student teaching
in public and private schools throughout the area. Some teachers
qualify for on-the-job student teaching or internships with area
schools.
Licensure to Master's Program
For
women and men who already have their bachelor's
degree and seek middle/secondary licensure, Alverno also offers
a graduate-level teacher-education program through which one may
earn both licensure and a master's degree within two years. Building
upon the core knowledge gained from an undergraduate degree program
in one of four broad areas (English language arts, mathematics,
science or social studies), Alverno's licensure to master's program
provides a practical, hands-on approach to a new career in teaching.
Admission to this program requires completion of the master's application
process.
Those needing coursework to complete
the required major may start in the post-baccalaureate program and,
when ready, apply for the graduate program.
