Prior
Learning Assessment in Education
Prior learning assessment (PLA) is a process designed
for learners who seek college-level credit for what they have learned
from experience and who can demonstrate that learning. PLA may be
used to demonstrate some but not all program outcomes.
You may be eligible for prior learning assessment if you have:
- Completed noncredit classroom experiences (e.g.,
courses, seminars, workshops)
- Used educational theory and frameworks to understand
teaching and learning
- Participated in paid or volunteer experience
working with P-12 students in a learning environment that correlates
with the level of certification sought
- Created/developed a product, publication, artistic
work, innovation, program, or curriculum based on principles of
teaching, learning, and assessment.
Prior Learning Assessment
Procedures in Education
Prior learning assessment credit may be
awarded for any course except:
- Interview Assessment (ED 220)
- Philosophy of Education (ED 412)
- Senior Research Seminar (ED 492)
- Portfolio/Interview Assessment (ED 420/422)
- Student Teaching
After eligibility is established, you will meet
with the appropriate department coordinator who will determine your
eligibility. If eligible, you will prepare a portfolio of materials
that may include:
- Letters of reference documenting experiences
and quality of performance
- Documentation of years of experience and responsibilities
- Video of interactive P-12 teaching experiences
with written reflections on how you used educational theory to
understand teaching and learning
- Documentation of successful completion of noncredit
courses or any licenses or awards.
You are urged to review Part II of the Education
Student Handbook prior to preparing your portfolio.
The portfolio is submitted to the department coordinator,
who will determine if an interview or additional assessments are
required.
Prior learning assessment may take the following
forms:
- Portfolio review
- Interview with faculty
- Performance assessments
