Prior
Learning Assessment in English
Prior learning assessment (PLA) is a process designed
for learners who seek college-level credit for what they have learned
from experience and who can demonstrate that learning. PLA may be
used to demonstrate some but not all program outcomes.
You may consider applying for prior learning assessment if you have:
- A GPA in English of 3.5 or above
- Advanced placement credits in English
- Been involved in extracurricular activity related
to publishing, journalism, or other literary contexts
- Worked in drama or any other literary field in
a professional context
Prior Learning Assessment
Procedures in English
Prior learning assessment credit may be awarded for any English
program outcomes.
After eligibility is established, you will follow
these procedures to participate in prior learning assessment:
- After an initial interview with a faculty member,
you will develop a portfolio and/or complete another assessment.
- You will then have a follow-up interview with
English Department faculty.
Prior learning assessment may take the following
forms:
- Portfolio review
- Interview with faculty
- Evidence of high school advanced-placement courses
and tests
- Current course assessments
