Nursing professor receives 2007 YWCA Woman
of Distinction award
Cathy Knuteson, associate professor of nursing, will receive the 2007 YWCA Women of Distinction award during the YWCA of Racine's 20th annual Women of Distinction awards dinner in August 2007. She will be recognized for her outstanding leadership in her professional career and for her community involvement which includes numerous volunteer activities.

APS accepts Behavioral Science Research Center submission
The Association for Psychological Science (APS) has accepted the submission of Kris Vasquez, assistant professor of psychology, for its 2007 APS Annual Convention in Washington. Vasquez will present the paper, "How Body Concept Differs From Other Self-Assessments: Perceived Control and Moral Failing," along with coauthors Stephen L. Franzoi, professor of psychology at Marquette University and Laura Halley, a senior at Alverno. APS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of scientific psychology and its representation at the national level; it is the largest organization of research psychologists in the country.
In addition, Vasquez is featured in the online article, "Weight-loss obsession can be hazardous."

History professor moderates book discussion
John Savagian, professor of history, moderated the second of four book discussions which is part of the Wisconsin Humanities Council's state-wide book discussion program called "A More Perfect Union: To Establish Justice." The group discussed Anthony Grooms' Bombingham, a novel that takes place during the events surrounding the famous children's march for civil rights in Birmingham in 1963.

Behavioral Sciences professor serves as keynote speaker
Professor of Behavioral Sciences, Stephen Sharkey, was keynote speaker at the Ohio Board of Regents regional Student Success Plan Conference, addressing attendees from about 20 institutions on “Assessment: Designing for Learning.” The conference was held in February 2007.

Philosophy professor participates in institute in Japan
Donna Engelmann, professor of philosophy, was one of twenty faculty members who participated in the Freeman Foundation Summer Institute in Japan, held at Tokai University in Honolulu. The participants studied the culture, history, politics and contemporary society of Japan with scholars from the United States and Japan, and will infuse Japanese studies in the curriculum in their home institutions.

Paper presented on Alverno's curriculum/politically engaged students
Russell Brooker. associate professor of social science, and Glen Rogers, senior research associate, presented a paper on how Alverno's curriculum leads students to be more politically engaged. The paper was presented during a conference at the Office of Professional and Instructional Development in Madison.

Dance/Theatre
instructor named poet Laureate of Milwaukee
Peggy Hong, a part-time instructor
who teaches yoga in the dance/theatre department at Alverno was
named Milwaukee's poet laureate in February 2006. In this capacity,
she will promote poetry at library and community events. Hong is
the city's fourth poet laureate; she will serve in this capacity
for two years.

Professor of Education
presents at conference on quality in higher education
Mary Diez traveled to Dubai, in the
United Arab Emirates, to represent Alverno in a conference on quality
in higher education. She gave a talk on "Developing Effective
Assessment in Outcome-Based Curriculum" as well as two workshop
sessions. While there, Diez met with faculty at Dubai Women's College.

Psychology professor published in Extreme
Rocketry
Paul Smith, associate professor of
psychology, was recently published in Extreme Rocketry.
His article, "Opportunity for Failure," discusses how
rocketry projects with their distinctive "failure modes"
provide perfect opportunities for students to problem solve, evaluate
their own work, and become independent learners.

Music faculty member published in new encyclopedia
Peter Roller, associate professor of music, was recently published in a new encyclopedia. His entry on Midwestern garage bands and garage rock is included in The American Midwest, An Interpretive Encyclopedia, published by Indiana University Press.
