Honors
School of Nursing receives honors
The Alverno College School of Nursing received the Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin Hope & Spirit Award in September 2006. Alverno was recognized as a community leader dedicated to improving the health status of the community, resolving to address serious healthcare challenges and having a profound commitment to meeting the health needs of the community. In May, the Milwaukee County Historical Society presented Alverno with an anniversary accolade commending the School of Nursing for 75 years of service to the Milwaukee community.

Alverno College selected for 'Teachers for the 21st Century' program
Alverno was recently selected as one of 20 leadership institutions in the Teachers for the 21st Century program, an initiative of the Council of Independent Colleges. The program is designed to strengthen teacher preparation programs and was developed with the support of a $495,500 grant from the Microsoft Corporation. The program will, over a four-year period, assist faculty members to integrate information and communication technologies, content, skills and literacy into courses taken by prospective teachers. Alverno was the only college from Wisconsin selected to participate in this program.

Grants
Alverno College and Mount Mary College
receive grants for Urban Education Fellows Program
Alverno and Mount Mary received $663,322 from the Trinity Foundation and $615,000 from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation for the Urban Education Fellows Program (UEFP), a teacher training consortium offered by the two colleges. The UEFP's two-year program is designed for people who majored in an area other than education, but now want to become licensed to teach. The students teach in private middle schools in the city of Milwaukee, and earn their middle school license and Master of Arts in Education degree at the end of the program's second year.

Alverno awarded a Wisconsin Improving Teacher Quality Higher Education
Program grant to work with 30 Milwaukee
Public Schools (MPS) science teachers in grades 5-8 over a three-year
period to strengthen their science content knowledge and build their
skill in working with inquiry-based teaching and learning in science.
Professors Mary Diez and Leona Truchan are grant leaders, working
with Alverno alumna Mary Staten, who is the Science Curriculum Specialist
at MPS.

receives $184,455 grant from the National Science Foundation
The National
Science Foundation has awarded a three-year $184,455 grant
to Alverno for support of the project, "Adapting Diagnostic
Digital Portfolio Technology to Track Assessment of Advanced Student
Learning Outcomes in Analysis and Problem Solving Abilities."

NASA awards five-year extension to Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium
The Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium has received
five years of funding and program renewal from NASA. The extension
means the 26-member consortium, which includes Alverno, will receive
$475,000 a year for the next five years from NASA.
The Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium
fosters the recruitment and support of students in science, mathematics
and technology by funding research, student scholarships and outreach
projects in a wide variety of fields related to aerospace.

Alverno receives "Empowering Women Award"
The YWCA Greater Milwaukee presented Alverno College with the Empowering Women Award at its second annual “Evening to Promote Racial Justice” held in December 2006. Alverno was recognized for its long-standing commitment to the higher education of women. The YWCA is committed to strengthen diversity, eliminate racism and empower women.

Alverno College and AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteers receive a 2007 Governor's Service Award
Alverno College and the AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteers working at Alverno have received a 2007 Governor’s Service Award, the "Community Service Outstanding Impact Award" for Partners in Service Learning: Alverno College and Escuela Vieau School project. The Governor's Service Recognitions are presented to programs and individuals participating in organizations funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service through AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and Learn and Serve America.
"Partners" is a unique model in that 23 students from Alverno volunteer to serve as mentors to 6th, 7th or 8th graders from Vieau school who are doing service-learning projects in their communities. Alverno students get to see their course materials lived out and practice key academic abilities such as communication, social interaction and problem solving.
Alverno College Campaign receives three ADDY Awards
2007: The Alverno College Recruitment Campaign earned three Wisconsin statewide ADDY's: a gold ADDY; a Gallery Gold ADDY (the creative is displayed in an art gallery; only one award is given in this category); and a JUDGE'S CHOICE ADDY (one judge believed that Alverno's creative was the best piece entered into the competition this year.) The ADDY's judges are unbiased national judges who are paid to enter a market and review entries.

Publications
"Student Success in College, Creating Conditions that Matter,"
published in 2005 by Jossey Bass, includes numerous positive examples
of an Alverno education at work including references to the college’s
operating philosophy, assessment processes, ability-based curriculum,
peer evaluation, study abroad program, student activities, study
abroad opportunities and many other areas. This book describes policies,
programs and practices that a diverse set of institutions have used
to enhance student achievement.

On Becoming a Productive University, Strategies for Reducing Costs
and Increasing Quality in Higher Education,
published in 2005 by Anker Publishing Company, is a collaborative
effort of scholars and practitioners who have taken the lead in
improving educational productivity at their universities and in
higher education generally. In both scope and depth, it represents
a comprehensive attempt to address the challenges of how to raise
productivity in higher education. The book addresses six broad approaches
including organizational change, assessment, faculty development,
technology, curricular change and classroom strategies. Three Alverno
faculty and staff contributed to this book. They are: William Rickards,
senior research associate in educational research and evaluation;
and Zohreh Emami and Tim Riordan, associate deans for academic affairs.
In addition, Emami is a professor of economics and Riordan is a
professor of philosophy.

recognized by AAC&U in its publication
Alverno College is nationally recognized by the Association of American
Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) in two out of 12 key programs
in its 2004 publication, "Taking Responsibility for the Quality
of the Baccalaureate Degree." AAC&U is the leading national
association committed to advancing and improving liberal education
for all students. The organization evaluated Alverno College as
advanced leaders in the areas of Teacher Education Portfolio Assessment
and Nursing Senior Assessment.
