Relay for Life of Alverno College
The 2009 Relay for Life of Alverno College was held on Saturday, April 25th and Sunday, 26th. Approximately 300 people - Alverno volunteers, cancer survivors, caregivers, family and friends - braved the rainy, soggy weather to raise money to help find a cure for cancer, fund survivor medical services and provide educational services. A hearty "Thank You!" to all who supported this event! More than $36,000 was raised.

 

Ambassador Amina Salum AliAmbassador visits Alverno
Ambassador Amina Salum Ali, permanent representative of the African Union to the U.S. and the Union's first woman ambassador, visited Alverno in March 2009. She came to discuss the African Union's strategies of accelerating socioeconomic integration of the continent, promoting peace and stability, and building partnerships between African governments, the private sector and all segments of civil society, particularly women and youth. Ambassador Ali's visit was made possible thanks to Alverno student Lacey Green, the business and management division, and Alverno President Mary J. Meehan Ph.D., among others.

 

Dr. Phil GardnerCollege labor market expert talks to Alverno students
Dr. Phil Gardner, Director of the Collegiate Employment Research Institute at Michigan State University addressed an audience of Alverno sophomores, juniors and seniors in a presentation titled "Job Search Trends: Getting the Edge in Today's Economy." Dr. Gardner visited Alverno on March 19, 2009. Dr. Gardner is the most sought after college labor market expert in the nation.

 

The International Listening Association (ILA) gives special recognition to Alverno

ILA award presented to Alverno CollegeOver the last 19 years Alverno has provided significant support for listening education in the college, the ILA, public and private schools, universities, plus conferences and conventions at the ILA's annual and regional meetings. The listening education program at Alverno has been internationally prominent in setting standards for all students and faculty to learn listening skills across the curriculum.

During the ILA's 2009 international convention held March 19-21, 2009, Alverno partnered with ILA in sponsoring - with both financial and in-kind services -an Education Conference held on Alverno's campus. The Association honored Alverno with a special recognition award during this conference.

Architect firm receives design award for Clare Hall

Uihlein Wilson Architects received a GOLD Design Award from the American Society of Interior Designers for its work on Alverno’s Clare Hall. The firm received a perfect score – 100 points out of 100 – in the category of “Contract Design—Educational/Institutional.”

Tennis to be added to Alverno's athletics program in Fall 2009

Beginning in fall 2009, the college will add tennis to its athletics program. Brad Duckworth, director of athletics, said the addition of tennis will allow Alverno to continue to attract some of the top high school athletes in the region.

"We are able to compete in one of the best conferences in the country in the Northern Athletics Conference and I look forward to seeing this program grow from a dream to a winner," Duckworth said.

Alverno will be the 12th team in the NAC to sponsor women's tennis and will be included in the conference schedule for the 2009-10 season.

Alverno wins two-year bid to host NAC softball championships, April 30-May 2

Due in part to Alverno’s facilities, location and facility upgrades, the College won a two-year bid to host the Northern Athletics Conference softball championships in 2009 and 2010. The top six of 13 teams in the conference will participate in the championships. Alverno Director of Athletics Brad Duckworth said, “We are thrilled to host such an important NAC event on our campus.  This is truly a reflection of the dedication that the whole campus has put in to having a first-class athletic program with first-class facilities.”

Thirty-first Annual Volunteer Assessor Appreciation Event

Alverno President Mary Meehan, Ph.D., welcomed 120 participants to the 31st annual Volunteer Assessor Evening of Appreciation on April 29, 2008.  Carol Dolphin, a ‘62 alumna of Alverno, was honored in absentia for 30 years of volunteer assessing.  The following were honored for 25 years of service: Janice Gifford ’82, Mary Beth Myers ’82, Susan Sawyer ’83, and Barbara Wesener ’70.  Elizabeth Burke ’87, ’00, was honored for 20 years of service.  Ten-year honorees were: Nancyann Marigomen, Jean Hansen ‘90, Margaret McManus, and Bea Whalen.

The program also included a panel of five students, moderated by professor Jeana Abromeit.   Students Cherie Barnier, Jillian Flood, Ljiljana Jovic, Kimberly Marshall-Easley and Crystal Placek shared their reflections on how the social interaction ability is important to them within their majors and in their work. 

Approximately 1,500 Milwaukee area volunteers from the business community have assisted the faculty in one of the largest academic volunteer programs in America. These volunteers are an integral part of the Alverno education model that inspires higher education programs throughout the country and world.

Alverno receives Urban Design Award

Presented in summer 2007, Alverno was awarded a 2006 Mayor’s Urban Design Award through the City of Milwaukee’s Department of City Development. The award recognizes exceptional urban design in the city of Milwaukee. Details
