Program

The theme of the meeting is Chemistry in our Community.  We will explore issues related to chemistry applications for our majors, as well as current issues in chemistry education.

Hotel Reservations:

SEPTEMBER 23, 2014:  The Clarion hotel block has been released.  You can still make reservations at the Clarion with airport and Alverno shuttles and you will be able to get the discounted rate if you mention "Alverno College" and if there are rooms available.  The deadline for the DoubleTree has been extended to September 29th.

There are many hotels in the greater Milwaukee area. We have reserved blocks of rooms at the DoubleTree Hotel downtown and the Clarion Hotel by the airport.  Both have shuttles to/from General Mitchell International Airport and to/from Alverno College on Friday and Saturday.

All Reservations must be made by September 29th in order to receive a discounted rate of $125 plus tax per night based on single/double occupancy in a standard king or double room (it is an additional $10 plus tax for each additional person).  There is a hotel parking fee of $15 per night per vehicle and one car is allowed per guest room.  Additional parking structures can be found within walking distance of the hotel.  The shuttle to Alverno from the DoubleTree on 10/24/14 will leave at noon and return at 8:45pm.  The shuttle to Alverno from the Clarion on 10/25/14 will leave at 7:30am.  There is no return shuttle to the DoubleTree on Saturday as checkout is 11am.  Guests will need to bring bags to Alverno.  We will have a locked luggage room at Alverno on Saturday for your convenience.

Participants must provide their own transportation (carpooling may be possible) and must pay vendor directly at the time of the activity.
 

Discovery World Tour ($7)

Discovery World is Milwaukee's science and technology center.  Visit exhibits like the Reiman Aquarium, Great Lakes Future, Milwaukee Muscle, the Simple Machine Shipyard, Les Paul's House of Sound, and more.  This tour starts at 2:30pm and runs approximately 45 min.  Cost for this tour includes admission to Discovery World (open until 5pm). Minimum of 10, Maximum of 50 registrants.

 
Harley-Davidson Museum Tour ($16)


The Harley-Davidson Museum houses more than 450 motorcycles and artifacts, dating back to Serial Number One.  Learn about how an internal combustion engine works, how Harley-Davidson contributed to America's efforts in two world wars, how motorcycles have influenced pop culture, and more.  This tour starts at approximately 2:00pm and runs approximately 45 min.  Cost for this tour includes admission to the Museum (open until 6pm).  Minimum of 15 registrants.

Great Lakes DistilleryDuring the approximately 1 hour tour, visitors will learn about award winning products, how and why they are made, and receive a flight of six products to try (complimentary soda is available for non-drinkers). Tour and tasting cost is $7.  Saturday tours are on the hour from 1-5pm.  Sunday afternoon tours also available.

Lakefront Brewery: Colorful tours go through the entire brewery on Saturday and tickets are only sold online.  Tours leave every 30 min from 11am-8pm.  Cost for the Lakefront Brewery tour is $7 and includes four draft servings and a souvenir pint glass or 2 Lakefront Brewery bumper stickers or $2 off any merchandise in the gift shop. There are also mini-tours available on Saturday and Technical Tours on Sunday at 10am (90 min tours geared toward the homebrewer or aficionado concluding with a food pairing $30.00).

Schlitz-Audubon Nature CenterSchlitz Audubon Nature Center is a 185-acre sanctuary of natural beauty and habitat located on the shores of Lake Michigan – just 15 minutes from downtown Milwaukee.  Adults: $6; Children: $4; Open 9am-5pm.

Milwaukee County ZooIn addition to over 2,000 mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles in specialized habitats spanning 200 wooded acres, visitors can explore educational wildlife shows, fun attractions, and special events.  Open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Admission prices range from $11.25 to $14.25 (children 2 and under free) and parking is $12 per car. 
Enjoy the Halloween Trick-or-Treat Spooktacular (costume parade, musical light show, and trick-or-treating) on
Oct. 24, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Oct. 25, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Milwaukee Public Museum (and Imax, Planetarium): Trek through Africa, surround yourself with hundreds of live butterflies, walk the streets of Old Milwaukee, learn about the history of today's American Indians, or take in a show in a six-story dome theater.  Open 9am-5pm.  Admission costs range from $7-21 (parking is extra).

Milwaukee Art MuseumMilwaukee Art Museum’s Collection includes nearly 25,000 works from antiquity to the present, encompassing painting, drawing, sculpture, decorative arts, prints, video art and installations, and textiles. The Museum’s collections of American decorative arts, German Expressionist prints and paintings, folk and Haitian art, and American art after 1960 are among the nation’s finest.  Open 10am-5pm, $17 (parking is extra).

Betty Brinn Children's Museum The Betty Brinn Children's Museum is dedicated to providing interactive exhibits and educational resources that promote the healthy development of children in their formative years—from birth through age ten. Saturday 9am-5pm, Sunday noon-5pm, $8 (parking is extra).

Mitchell Park Conservatory (The Domes): Experience a desert oasis, a tropical jungle and special floral gardens . . . all in one afternoon . . . and an amazing lighting display in the evening!  Five seasonal displays each year will delight you with their beauty and will serve to inspire your own gardens.  Open 9am-4pm, $7.
