CIR provides monthly, quarterly, and annual measures of industrial activity. The CIR program produces timely, accurate data on production and shipments of selected products. The data can be used for market analysis, forecasting, and decision-making in the private sector. These surveys measure manufacturing activity in important commodity areas such as textiles and apparel, chemicals, primary metals, computer and electronic components, industrial equipment, aerospace equipment, and consumer goods.

A commercial site with concise industry summaries covering each industry’s national and international climate, issues, trends, and environmental concerns. A good starting place to choose an industry to research.
This free financial report service, provided by IR Solutions, a financial information services firm, offers PDF versions of company annual reports and HTML versions of their Form 10Ks, both of which are primary sources of financial information about a company. The 10K Form discloses total sales, revenue, and pretax operating income, as well as sales by product classes for the company's separate lines of business for each of the past five years. Locate reports by browsing alphabetically, by entering a company name or ticker symbol, by exchange, by industry or by 13 industry sectors.

This site features directory information (address, phone, Web address, etc.) for over 100,000 public and private U.S. companies including non-profit organizations. Free registration is needed to receive more company information.
- GuideStar - The National Database of Nonprofit Organizations
The searchable database includes the mission, programs, finances, and contacts for over one million nonprofit organizations in the United States. This basic information is free but requires registration. Additional information is available for a subscription fee.
- Consumer World
This site offers a comprehensive listing of over 1,500 consumer-related sites. It features product reviews, comparison pricing, product recalls, federal and state consumer agencies, latest news, and more.
- The National Retail Federation
Much of the NRF’s data is available for free. Researchers can find information on the top global retailers. They can also locate data on spending related to holidays and other events as well.
- U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
The U.W. Consumer Product Safety Commission is a federal agency with jurisdiction over approximately 15,000 consumer products. This site provides information on these products as well as the latest recalls, important safety tips, news, etc.

The Women's Business Enterprise National Council is a leading advocate of women-owned businesses as suppliers to America's corporations. It was founded in 1997. The WBENC claims to be the largest third-party certifier of businesses owned and operated by women in the United States. WBENC works with representatives of corporations to encourage the utilization and expansion of supplier/vendor diversity programs. - Bureau of Economic Analysis
From the U.S. Department of Commerce, this site has statistics divided into four sections: National, International, Regional, and Industry. Gives current and historical data and analyses. Find statistical tables covering gross domestic products, personal income, trade and investment. Good for tracking and analysis of economic issues in the U.S.
- Economic Census
The Economic Census profiles American business every 5 years, from the national to the local level. The 2007 Economic Census is the most recent. It covers most of the U.S. economy in its basic collection of establishment statistics. You will find statistics on minority- and women-owned businesses. The Economics and Statistics Administration at the US Department of Commerce maintains this site. It provides current economic indicators from the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the US Census Bureau. The timeliness is critical because indicators, while reflecting business activity, also impact business, financial, and policy decisions. The search page shows the indicators, sources (i.e., the Census Bureau and/or the BEA), the frequency (monthly or quarterly), and the time of release. [The following is copied directly from the CHOICE review online] “A master calendar with release dates for the current year is available on the top menu bar and also linked with each indicator. The page does not contain a standardized data format; thus, the quality of data presentation and export ease varies with each indicator. Some data sets open directly into Microsoft Excel and can be downloaded with ease; others do not.”
