Careers & Internships

What will I do with my history major?

Your critical thinking, research and communication skills developed through the study of history are an excellent foundation for careers and graduate school. You will be prepared for careers in teaching, law, journalism, and business or work in libraries and museums. Our majors have gone on to positions in government, non-profit organizations, museums, colleges and universities, libraries, and private corporations.  With excellent research, writing, and speaking skills and an understanding of how the world works, you will be sought after in many fields.

Internships

At Alverno, students find that history is often best learned by experiencing what it means to be a historian.  Every history student will gain experience working in the field through an internship to give you practical experience and time to explore the right history career for you.  You can join other Alverno students who have interned with the Captain Frederick Pabst Mansion, the Milwaukee Art Museum, Old World Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Bar Association, and the Washington Center in Washington, DC.

Study Abroad

Studying history at Alverno requires students to think about the world.  Some students decide to learn about a people's history by experiencing the country first-hand - learning their history where it happened.  As a student at Alverno, you will have many opportunities to study abroad.  Students can choose from short-term two week travel excursions or semester or full-year programs.  Alverno provides study abroad opportunities in every part of the world including England, Italy, China, Japan, Korea, Tanzania, and Denmark.

For more information on these topics contact Alverno's Career Center, Internship Office and International and Intercultural Center.
