Licensure Programs
It’s not just an education, it’s an experience.
Learning never stops. And knowledge is only useful if you know how to apply it. That’s why Alverno offers post-baccalaureate licensure and certificate programs that are individualized and focused on your career and personal goals.
Open to women and men through the convenience of our Alverno on the Weekend program, the licensure and certificate programs are tailored to your busy life.
Our teacher-education program is not only one of the best in the nation, but is internationally renowned. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan singled out our teacher education program as a “shining star.”
We create a licensure program for you
We review your previous coursework and match it to current state licensure requirements. A program is then designed expressly for you to meet unfulfilled requirements.
A Full Range of Teacher-Education Programs
For men and women who already hold a bachelor’s degree seeking initial teacher licensure, we offer nationally acclaimed teacher preparation programs:
- Post-baccalaureate Licensure Program
Our post-baccalaureate licensure program is spread over two and one-half years, after which you will have the tools and skills you need to get into a classroom and onto your new career.
- Licensure-to-Master’s Program
Our licensure-to-master’s program is a graduate-level teacher education program offering the option of earning a licensure only or both licensure and a master’s degree. You can complete your required coursework for a teaching license in as little as 18 months. Complete three additional graduate courses, and earn your Master of Arts in Education.
- Special Education Licensure
You can now receive a special education teaching license without sacrificing your life. We stay flexible with classes every other weekend, and you'll be leading your own class within two years. Want to continue to land a Master's Degree? You'll need just three more courses.
If you are a licensed teacher and are looking to add another initial teaching license, we offer initial teacher licensure in:
Early Childhood/Middle Childhood
Middle Childhood/Early Adolescence
Do you need help preparing for Praxis I?
We offer classes to help you pass the Praxis test required by the State of Wisconsin for all licensed teachers. For requirements regarding each of the licensure programs, contact Graduate Admissions at 414-382-6100 or 800-399-3401.
Field Experiences and Student Teaching
We offer a wide range of options in both field placements and student teaching in public and private schools throughout the area.
Professional development
We offer a full range of courses for teachers like you, who are looking to improve practices. Whether it’s science, computers, reading or math teaching methods, or new ways to assess student progress, there are courses for teachers throughout the year.
Convenient class times
We have designed these programs with your schedule in mind. In the post-baccalaureate program, classes are offered late afternoons, evenings and during the summer. The licensure-to-master’s programs are offered in fall and spring, and graduate education classes meet every other weekend.
