Visiting Educators

Approximately 600 educators representing more than 200 institutions in the United States and abroad come to Alverno College each year to attend workshops and institutes to learn about Alverno's teaching methods.

Here are a few notable visitor highlights from 2007:

DJ Jensen, executive director of the Work Colleges Consortium from Berea College, Kentucky, met with faculty and students in February to discuss Alverno's curricular history, curriculum challenges and new programming. The Work Colleges Consortium, along with the Johnson Foundation, sponsored a conference on Learning Outcomes held at Wingspread, in Racine, Wisconsin, in March.

Five educators from the University of Michigan met in April with members of the Alverno faculty and staff to discuss the mutual interest of student learning and technology, with special emphasis on Alverno's Diagnostic Digital Portfolio.

Alverno College hosted Rodrigo del Valle, Ph.D., director of continuing and graduate studies for the Catholic University of Temuco, in Temuco, Chile, in April. His visit with several Alverno departments and two classes assisted the University in developing and implementing a competency-based learning curriculum. An additional team of faculty from Chile attended Alverno's June workshop.

The June 2007 workshop (Connecting Student Learning Outcomes to Teaching, Assessment, Curriculum) drew 131 participants representing 37 institutions of higher learning, including teams from Medgar Evers College, Tokyo Women's Medical University, Kettering College, Universidad Catholica de Temuco, Hong Kong Polytechnic and Capilano College. Participants hailed from 13 states, including New York, Ohio and Montana, as well as seven countries - Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, Spain and the United Kingdom.

In November, six educators from Shinshu University in Matsumoto, Japan, and one visitor from the Kawaijuku Educational Institution in Osaka, Japan, met with Alverno faculty and staff to discuss issues related to assessment and the ability-based curriculum.
