Childcare Services Available to Alverno Students
Childcare Grant for Alverno Students
Alverno College is the recipient of a U.S. Department of Education
Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) grant that will
enable the college to offer additional financial assistance to students
over the next four years. This grant provides funding for childcare
services for parents attending Alverno full time. Students must
meet federal financial eligibility standards to qualify. Recognizing
the unique needs faced by many student parents, the Alverno Childcare
program emphasizes nurturing care, flexibility, affordability and
support while the parent attends classes.
1. Applicant must be a Pell-eligible student attending
Alverno College
2. A student receiving childcare subsidy from the
State of Wisconsin is not eligible for a CCAMPIS Grant.
3.Students in the CCAMPIS program must be enrolled
full-time and maintain good academic and financial standing with
the College. Students in the CCAMPIS program must be taking a minimum
of 12 credits.
4. Applicant must attend classes during the time
childcare services are rendered.
5. Grant funding is paid directly to Alverno Childcare.
6. The grant recipient will be required to comply
with the rules and regulations of Alverno Childcare.
7. Recipients must be willing to complete any surveys
requested that are required by the U.S Education Department.
Application
Students must complete an application and return it to Mary Rowe in Financial Aid. Any questions can be directed to Mary Rowe.
Hours
Childcare Services is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to
5:30 p.m., except during Alverno-designated holidays. If the college
closes for weather-related reasons, Childcare also will close.
Fees
Fees charged are based on student, faculty, staff or community status.
Each semester parents contract for a set amount of hours of childcare
per week. Fees are charged according to the contract from the first
day of the semester until the day before the beginning of the next
semester.
Wait list
Since children are enrolled on a first-come, first-served basis,
it is necessary to have a waiting list. Even if your child is not
yet born, you may add your name to the list. It is never too early
to sign up, so please call 414-382-6076. Typically, space is more
readily available in June, August and January.

Philosophy
We believe in quality programming for children of all ages. Children
grow and develop through active exploration of the environment in
a warm and nurturing setting. We believe in the uniqueness of each
child and strive to meet the individual needs of each child. We
believe that children benefit from an environment that is child
centered and looks at the whole child, with an emphasis on the development
of positive self-esteem. Childcare Services works with parents to
enhance the lives of children. Based on these beliefs, we provide
a wide variety of educational experiences for children.
Each day includes structured and unstructured periods
with an emphasis on decision making and individual involvement.
Social-emotional, motor, cognitive and language development are
considered as activities and are planned as the environment is defined.
Children are encouraged to express themselves and gain self-confidence
in their social interaction skills.

Educating
Infants
In order to individualize our program for each infant, an update
will be completed by parents every three months. The updates will
include information on the child's growth, behavior and development.
In order to make infants as comfortable as possible, they will be
able to sleep and eat as needed. Parents will submit their child's
schedule as a guideline to be followed by our staff.
Children who are not yet walking will not be in one position or
area for long periods of time. They will be allowed to crawl, swing
or sit in an infant seat, for example. This provides stimulation
and will give variety to the child's day.
Developmentally appropriate toys will be provided for infants. In
addition, teachers will interact with the children using music,
toys and books.

Goals for Toddler Programs
(12 - 24 months)
Educational: Children will be introduced to basic
concepts through music, finger plays, small group activities and
play. They will be involved in direct hands-on experiences with
objects, ideas and events.
Social: Opportunities will be provided for parallel and/or
small play. Teachers encourage sharing, use of words to express
needs, feeling and coping with the environment.
Behavioral: Teachers set limits for children to learn appropriate
behaviors when interacting with other children and encourage the
use of language to solve conflicts.
Daily Schedule: Due to the nature of children, daily schedules
are flexible. Included are structured activities, free choice activities,
outdoor play, small group times and a nap period.

Preschool
Programs and Prekindergarten Program
Educational: Children will be involved in direct hands-on
experiences with people, objects, ideas and events. They will be
exposed to experiences that guide their intellectual, physical and
social/emotional development.
Social-Emotional: Children will be involved in making plans
and expressing choices. They will be actively involved in solving
problems, expressing and understanding their feelings while being
sensitive to other's feelings, interests and needs. The skill of
building relationships with children and adults create an experience
of collaborative play while developing strategies for dealing with
social conflict.
Daily Schedule: Children will alternate between structured
and unstructured times. The day follows a schedule of events providing
consistency for both children and adults. The schedule is designed
to allow children to pursue their own interests, make plans and
follow through with them. During small group, children reflect on
their experiences with peers and adults.
