Two words: Jazz Royalty. Need more? OK. Pianist with the legendary John Coltrane Quartet, recording with Coltrane on such seminal albums as My Favorite Things, Live at the Village Vanguard, Africa/Brass, and what is arguably the single greatest jazz recording of the 20th Century, A Love Supreme. Recorded over 80 albums under his name, earned four Grammys, and was awarded Jazz Master from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2002. Four final words: Not to be missed!

The David Grisman Quintet 30th Anniversary Tour with special guests Old School Freight Train
11/4/06, 8 p.m., $35
Audio Clip

Bluegrass + Swing + Latin + Jazz + Gypsy = “Dawg Music.” For over 40 years, mandolinist/composer David Grisman has been creating a sound so unique, he had to give it its own name. His collaborators read like a “Who’s Who” of contemporary music: Bela Fleck, the Grateful Dead, Stephane Grappelli, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Earl Scruggs, to name only a few. Not enough to begin the season with one legend? Let’s follow it up with a second!

Special Non-Subscription Family Event - Jon Langford and The Wee Hairy Beasties
11/5/06, 11:30 a.m., $10.

Dan Zanes led the way of rockers making cool music for kids and kid sympathizers (think Wilco for the toddler set).

Many have followed, but none has made his mark quite like “the Dean of Chicago Rock,” the inimitable Jon Langford. Joined by his fellow-Mekon, the beguiling Sally Timms, Langford and the Wee Hairy Beasties have sold out shows all over Chicago, including a spectacular show at the Brookfield Zoo this past summer. This show is for children of all ages who love listening to great music and dancing with their friends and neighbors.

Cyro Baptista/Beat the Donkey 11/17/06, 8 p.m., $25
Audio Clip
http://www.cyrobaptista.com

How do you spell “Party”? In Portuguese? In Malay? In Senegalese? With Beat The Donkey, Cyro gives free reign to his imagination, mixing instruments from Brazil, the U.S., Indonesia and Africa with his own instruments. It is mysterious, spellbinding, infectious, irresistible dance music. Cyro himself roams the stage, conducting his troupe with fiendish glee, keeping the audience's attention captive for the whole show. The amazing thing about Beat The Donkey is the unending variations; you could listen to them all night and still want to hear more. And we’ve got a surprise for the finale that you won’t see anyplace else!

Roches/Holidays with a Twist
12/2/06, 8 p.m., $30

It’s Christmas with your favorite wacky aunts! After their critically and popularly acclaimed Zero Church concert with Alverno Presents this past season, Maggie and Suzzy, brother David and honorary brother Marlon Cherry, are joined by sister Terre in what is truly a Roche Family Reunion! Holidays with a Twist features material from their 30-year career as well as selections from We Three Kings, their beloved Christmas CD. It’s a fun, family show which would put even Scrooge into the holiday spirit!

Billy Childs Jazz Chamber Ensemble 2/17/07, 8 p.m., $30
Audio Clip

The first thing that hits you about the music of Billy Child is its lush melodic invention. And then you listen a little longer, and you pick up the elegant intricacies of how his piano speaks with the guitar, sax, bass, percussion, and, yes, harp. One is tempted to describe it as Bill Evans meets Debussy, except the whole of Child’s blend of jazz and classical idioms is truly larger than the sum of those parts – it’s smart – it’s gorgeous – and after an evening of his music, the world will seem that much better.

Carla Kihlstedt -Necessary Monsters (inspired by Jorge Luis Borges' "Book of Imaginary Beings")
3/3/07, 8 p.m., $25
Audio Clip
http://www.kihlstedt.net

If anyone can set Jorge Luis Borges to music, it’s Carla Kihlstedt.

Though trained in the classical canon, violinist, vocalist and composer Carla Kihlstedt has stretched her experience of music far beyond the classical stage. She is a founding member of Tin Hat Trio, 2 Foot Yard, and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. Alverno Presents, in collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and the National Performance Network, has commissioned Carla to compose Necessary Monsters. Inspired by the Borges’ collection of creatures from myth and dreams, Carla’s songs for violin, voice and small orchestra will bring to life such fantastic beings as the Ink Monkey, the Animal Dreamed and Hundred-Headed Snake.

It's rock meets jazz meets classical meets root until the categories lose all meaning and become magnificently Carla!

Stephen Petronio Company/Bloom 3/17/07, 8 p.m., $35
http://stephenpetronio.com/

It would be enough to see the passionately acclaimed Stephen Petronio Company dance anything – they are that vivid, that wild, and that hot!

His new evening-length work, Bloom, celebrates the openness and purity of youth. Says Petronio, "Bloom is to be in flower, a time of vigor, freshness, and flourish, an awesomely energized and beautiful moment." And if that's not enough, throw in an original score by the one and only Rufus Wainwright, performed live by the Milwaukee Children's Choir, and you have one of the few "must see" events of the 06/07 season.

Andrew Bird
4/21/07, 8 p.m., $25

Audio Clip
http://www.andrewbird.net

We could tell you that Andrew Bird is the original one man band of indie rock. We could describe his performances where he alternately plucks and bows his violin, immediately sampling the results, and then layers the sounds with guitar, glockenspiel, vocals, and whistling (the dude’s a world class whistler). We could share all the critical adjectives – “haunting” – “pastoral” – “magical.” Or we could leave it all to USA Today (a not entirely comfortable concept), but they were the ones who nail it with “Beck meets Itzhak Perlman.”
