Inferno Drop a Pair to Wisconsin Lutheran
The Alverno College women’s softball team capped a six home games at in three days stretch on Sunday by losing a doubleheader with Northern Athletics Conference and crosstown rival Wisconsin Lutheran College (WLC). The visiting Warriors took the opener, 9-2, and finished the sweep by scratching out a 2-0 win.
Game one on the afternoon started out as a pitcher’s dual between the Inferno’s Brianne Porter (Fr., Oak Creek, WI / Oak Creek) and the Warriors’ Michelle Shambeau. Through four innings, the only scoring came from WLC designated hitter Emily Foster, who hit a two-out, two-strike, two-run home run in the top of the first inning. Porter eventually ran out of gas however and gave up seven runs in the game’s final three innings. The Inferno avoided the shutout in the bottom of the seventh inning on RBI ground outs by Porter and 3B Andrea Spindler (Jr., Greendale, WI / Greendale) .
The second game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when Wisconsin Lutheran’s SS Katie Sloan rapped a two-run, two-out single to left centerfield. Alverno right-hander Jessica Goetz (So., Milwaukee, WI / Milwaukee Luther) was the hard luck loser in game two giving up the two runs on only six hits, while striking out nine.
Alverno will be back in action at home on Thursday, April 10th, when they face Aurora University. Doubleheader action set to begin at 3pm. The game is a make-up from April 1st.
