Porter Puts up Goose Eggs as Alverno Sweeps

(4/17/2008) – The Alverno College women’s softball team won a pair of games against cross-town rival Mount Mary College on Thursday, 8-0 (5 innings) and 6-2.

Alverno (7-17) scored three runs in both the first and third innings to secure the win in the opener.  The Inferno were aided on offense by four Mount Mary errors.  Alverno pitcher Brianne Porter (Fr., Oak Creek, WI / Oak Creek) was near unhittable.  Porter went the distance in game one, giving up three hits and striking out seven while walking none.  Inferno centerfielder Melissa Bankenbush (Fr., Franksville, WI / Union Grove) was perfect at the plate, going 3-3 with two RBI and a run.

In Game 2 Alverno was able to break open a 3-2 battle in the fourth inning with a two-out, three-run rally.  With two down and Sarah Schwenn (Fr., Union Grove, WI / Union Grove) on second base after a single and a steal, the Inferno got four straight hits to account for their runs.  The big pop came in the form of an RBI triple off the bat of catcher Bec Schmid (Jr., Tigerton, WI / Tigerton)

Katie Stoxen (Fr., Silver Lake, WI / Catholic Central) started the game for Alverno.  She gave up two unearned runs in her three innings of work.  Porter then took over and pitched a scoreless final four innings.  On the day, Porter worked nine innings, gave up five hits, no runs, struck out 13, and only walked two.

Alverno will be back in action on the road tomorrow, April 18th, when they travel to Watertown to take on Maranatha Baptist Bible College.  Doubleheader action set to begin at 3pm.
