Alverno Swept in Home Opener

(4/4/08) -- After a couple of postponements, the Alverno College women's softball team was finally able to get out onto their home field on Friday to play a doubleheader against Northern Athletics Conference rival Marian College. However it was the Sabres that made themselves at home, sweeping the Inferno by scores of 4-2 and 9-1 (6 innings).
The day started off well for the home team as Alverno (3-11, 0-4) jumped out to a two-run lead in the 3rd inning thanks to a two-out, two-run double by catcher Bec Schmid (Jr., Tigerton, WI / Tigerton). Marian (11-7, 5-1) came back to score singular runs in the fourth-seventh innings for the come-from-behind win. Sabre runs in the fifth and seventh came via lead-off solo home runs by Emily Wiesman (5th) and Ashley Engler (7th). Jessica Goetz (So., Milwaukee, WI / Martin Luther) took the loss for the Inferno. Goetz worked six innings, gave up six hits, four earned runs, struck out eight, and walked none.
Game two saw the Alverno offense struggle against Marian starter Kristin Rose. The Inferno managed only two hits and one unearned run against the sophomore from Brownsville. Elizabeth Malko (Jr., New Berlin, WI / Eisenhower) was the only Alverno starter to figure out Rose at the plate, accounting for both of her team's hits.
Today's action marked the beginning of a busy weekend for Alverno. The team will play a doubleheader at Concordia-WI tomorrow (Saturday) before returning home for a doubleheader on Sunday against Wisconsin Lutheran. First pitch for tomorrow's game is 2pm. Sunday's home matchup will begin at 12pm.
