Alverno Sweeps Crusaders, Win 5th Straight
(4/18/2008) – When this week began, the Alverno College women's softball team hadn't played in eight days, had only 4 wins, and 1 win in Northern Athletics Conference play. After Friday night's 8-3 and 11-3 road sweep at Maranatha Baptist Bible College, the Inferno have more than doubled that overall win total (9-17), and quadrupled their conference "W's" (4-10).
In game one, patience was the name of the game for Alverno. Despite getting outhit 8-6, the Inferno were able to coax 9 walks out of Crusader starter Rebekah Witter, helping them score 7 unanswered runs after the 1st inning. Melissa Bankenbush (Fr., Franksville, WI / Union Grove) was the offensive star, going 1-3 at the plate, knocking in 3 runs, and scoring 3 more. Jessica Goetz (So., Milwaukee, WI / Martin Luther) went the distance for the win. Goetz struck out 10.
In game 2 every Alverno starter logged at least one hit as the visitors scored in all 5 innings of the game. Bankenbush, thriving since making the move to the number 2 spot in the batting order, went 2-4, scored twice, had 2 RBI, and stole 2 bases. Andrea Spindler (Jr., Greendale, WI / Greendale) went 2-3 with 4 RBI. A day after pitching 9 innings in Alverno's doubleheader sweep of Mount Mary, Brianne Porter (Fr., Oak Creek, WI / Oak Creek) returned to the rubber in game two, picking up the win. Porter worked all 5 innings and gave up only 4 hits and 0 earned runs.
Alverno will attempt to continue its winning ways tomorrow (Saturday) when they host a doubleheader against Edgewood College. First pitch set for 12pm.
