Win Streak Snapped as Edgewood Sweeps Inferno

(4/18/2008) –  Costly errors in both games of their doubleheader against Edgewood College turned what could have been a huge sweep for the Alverno College women's softball team, into two heart-breaking losses, 3-2 and 11-7.

Game 1 was a pitcher's dual with neither the Eagles' Jenna Ryan nor the Inferno's Jessica Goetz (So., Milwaukee, WI / Martin Luther) blinking through 7 innings.  In the top of the 8th however, it was Goetz that got into trouble, giving up a lead off single and a walk before Eagle DH Britt Rynes made her pay with an RBI single to right center field that wound up being the difference.

While both teams made some stellar plays in the field, it was Alverno's D that committed a costly error in the 6th inning that led to a unearned run and gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead at the time.  In the bottom of that inning, Alverno was able to string together three straight 1-out singles to tie the game at 2-2. But with runners on 1st and 2nd and only 1 down, they were unable to push anymore runs across.  Despite pitching all 8 innings, scattering 8 hits, only 2 earned runs, and striking out 4, Goetz was the hard luck loser in the contest.

In game 2, the Inferno held a 7-4 lead in the 5th inning.  However, another error in the field with two outs and nobody on base, led to a 6-run rally that put the Eagles in front for good, 11-7.  Brianne Porter (Fr., Oak Creek, WI / Oak Creek) started the game for Alverno and gutted out 4 innings before giving way to Goetz for the final 2.  While the two pitchers gave up 11 runs, only 2 of them were earned.  Bec Scmid (Jr., Tigerton, WI / Tigerton) led the Inferno's 13 hit attack with 3 base knocks and two RBI.

After playing 6 games in the last 3 days, Alverno now will get some much needed rest before returning to action on Wednesday, April 23, when they travel to Dominican University.  First pitch in that doubleheader will be thrown at 3pm.
