Cougars Overcome Elements; Sweep Inferno (4/26/2008) – Northern Athletics Conference rivals Concordia-Chicago and Alverno College had to battle more than each other during Saturday’s softball doubleheader. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph wreaked havoc for both teams throughout the afternoon. But it was Concordia weathering the weather a little better, sweeping the Inferno, 2-0 and 4-3 in 10 innings. In Game 1, the Inferno's Jessica Goetz (So., Milwaukee, WI / Martin Luther) and Cougar pitcher Becky Bryzgalski matched goose eggs through five innings. In the top of the sixth, Goetz got into trouble when she loaded the bases with nobody out. On the next play, Concordia (10-18, 10-14 NAC) managed to score two runs and commit two outs on a ball that did not make it out of the infield. The Cougars’ Lauren Wendell hit a high pop up to 2nd base. The infield fly rule was called for the first out on the play. However Inferno (9-23, 4-16 NAC) 2nd baseman Brianne Porter (Fr., Oak Creek, WI / Oak Creek) lost the battle with the wind and the pop fly dropped to the ground. In the confusion between the drop and the infield fly, two Cougar runners scored before Bryzgalski, who began the play at first, got caught between first and 2nd and was tagged out by Inferno SS Megan Burgess (Fr., Racine, WI / Racine Park). Alverno put two runners on base in the bottom of the 7th, but was unable to push either runner across. In game 2, the Inferno broke through a 2-2 deadlock in the top of the 10th thanks to back-to-back errors by Cougar SS Erica Mackie. Down 3-2 in the bottom of the 10th however, Mackie redeemed herself with a 2-run double to left field to give the Cougars the win and the sweep, 4-3. Alverno will be back in action on the road, Sunday, April 27th, when they travel to Illinois to take on the Regents of Rockford College. Doubleheader action is set to begin at 12pm. |
