Long Day Results in Three L's

Porter Spindler Bankenbush
(3/24/08) -- The Alverno women's softball team had a day off for Easter Sunday. They would need it to endure the gauntlet that faced them on Monday. Forced to make up a game that they started on Saturday but that was suspended due to lightning, The Inferno played the equivalent of 2 1/2 games on Monday before the noon lunch whistle had blown.
UW-Whitewater 14, Alverno 7
First item for business on the day was to finish the suspended game against UW-Whitewater. The first four innings of the contest were played on Saturday, in a constant rain that affected both sides. Whitewater pitchers gave up only one hit in the game but issued 13 walks to Inferno hitters. On the flip side, the sloppy conditions contributed to 12 Alverno passed balls. By the time the game was finally called on Saturday, Whitewater held an 11-4 advantage.
In better conditions today, the two teams finished up the last 3 innings at 8am with each scoring three runs in the fifth for a final score of 14-7. Designated hitter Brianne Porter (Fr., Oak Creek, WI /Oak Creek) notched the only hit for the Inferno, a lead-off single in that 3-run fifth inning. Melissa Bankenbush (Fr., Franksville, WI / Union Grove) continued to produce from the lead off spot, drawing 3 walks and coming around to score twice. Jessica Goetz (So., Milwaukee, WI / Martin Luther) , who threw a no-hitter in her first action of the season, was hung with the loss in this game. Goetz pitched 6 innings, gave up 14 runs on 10 hits while striking out 6. Half of the Warhawks scores were unearned however, the result of 5 Inferno errors.
Southern Maine 9, Alverno 5
The Inferno flexed their muscle at the plate in their second game of the day against Southern Maine. Alverno smacked 3 home runs, two of them coming off the bat of Bankenbush. Unfortunately the power surge did not come until Alverno had given up 7 runs in the first two frames. Porter started the game and took the loss, giving up all 9 of Southern Maine's runs. Goetz shut them down after that, giving up no runs, no hits, and striking out 5 in four innings of relief.
SS Lea Colon (Sr., Antioch, IL / Kenosha Bradford) hit the Inferno's other home run, the second of back-to-back solo blasts that came with one out in the 3rd inning.
Colby College 7, Alverno 1
After 3 scoreless innings for both teams, Colby broke open the 0-0 tie by rapping 5 straight hits to lead off the fourth, en route to a four- run frame off of starter Katie Stoxen. They added three more in the 6th before 3B Andrea Spindler (Jr., Greendale, WI / Greendale) was able to break up the shut out with an RBI single in the bottom of the 6th scoring Sarah Schwenn (Fr., Union Grove, WI / Union Grove) and accounting for the Inferno's only score.
In the two full games today, Alverno's defense committed 0 errors. The Inferno move to 2-6 on the season.
