Inferno Win Game, Lose Gruber

Brianne Porter Andrea Spindler
(3/22/08) -- The Alverno women's softball team knocked out 16 hits against SUNY-Potsdam Saturday morning en route to a 12-5 victory. After only being able to scratch out 8 hits and 2 runs in two losses on Friday, the Inferno (2-3) scored in every inning but the 4th against Potsdam.
Eight Alverno starters had two hits in the contest. 3B Andrea Spindler (Jr., Greendale, WI / Greendale) led off the second inning with a solo home run and finished the day going 2-4 with 3 RBI.
That is all the support Inferno starter Brianne Porter (Fr., Oak Creek, WI / Oak Creek) would need. Porter (1-2) notched her first win of the season, working a complete game, giving up 4 earned runs, scattering 10 hits, and striking out 4.
The only bad news for Alverno came in the top of the 7th inning when starting catcher Sarah Gruber (Sr., Oak Creek, WI / Oak Creek) got her leg caught under her while sliding into the rain-softened dirt by second base. Gruber left the game with an apparent leg/ankle injury and is not expected to play again in Florida. For news on her condition, be sure to read updates from "Sarah's Florida Blog".
The second game of the day vs. UW-Whitewater was suspended in the fourth inning, with the Warhawks leading 11-4. That game will be continued on Monday at 8am before Alverno plays their regularly scheduled Monday games at 9 and 11 am.
Alverno has a day off on Easter Sunday (3/23).
