Big 2nd Half Lifts Alverno
Gabby Allen Katie Salentine
(12/18/2007) -- The Alverno College basketball team gave themselves an early Christmas present on Tuesday night with a 78-56 win over Silver Lake College. While Alverno held the lead for most of the contest, they went into the halftime locker room with only a five point lead. Even midway through the second half, the outcome was still very much in doubt.
However, in the end it was the Lakers' inability to stop Alverno freshman Gabby Allen (Fr., Milwaukee, WI / Bayview High School) both offensively and defensively that led to their undoing. Allen, quickly becoming one of the team's more consistent performers, scored 27 points and pulled down 9 rebounds on this night, both career highs. Katie Salentine (So., Muskego, WI / Muskego High School) chipped in 11 points and 6 rebounds off the bench, including a 5-5 performance from the free throw line.
The win snaps a seven-game losing streak for Alverno (3-8, 0-6 NAC) and also puts a positive ending on a stretch that saw them play three road games in four days. The squad will now get some rest over the holidays before returning to action January 5, 2008 for a non-conference tilt with Mount Mary College.
