Moody’s 30 Holds Off Inferno’s Comeback Bid

Lisa Sorgi Alex Salisbury
(1/19/2008) – A 13-0 run to begin the second half stretched Marian College’s lead over host Alverno College to 19 with 16:14 remaining during Saturday afternoon’s Northern Athletics Conference women’s basketball game. What seemed to be a laugher however, saw the Sabres barely hanging on to an 80-70 win. The Inferno responded to Marian’s run going on a 14-0 stretch of their own, part of a furious 2nd half comeback in which the lead shrunk to 74-70 with :40 remaining. The Sabres then hit 6-8 free throws to secure the win. Marian’s Coleen Moody led all scorers with 30 points on an amazing 12-13 shooting performance from the floor.
The first half played out similar to the 2nd for the Inferno. With the score 16-15 in favor of the Sabres, Marian scored 11 straight for a 27-15 advantage. But the Inferno refused to go away as they scratched back to within six at halftime, 38-32, thanks to a Katie Huse (Jr., Milwaukee, WI / Grace Christian High School) 3-pointer with :05 seconds on the clock.
Lisa Sorgi (So., Milwaukee, WI / Greenfield) was an offensive force in the 2nd half for the Inferno. Sorgi scored 25 points in the game, a season high, 21 of which came in the 2nd stanza. Gabby Allen (Fr. Milwaukee, WI / Thomas More), Katie Salentine (So., Muskego, WI / Muskego), and Joslyn Binkowski (Jr., Greenfield, WI / Greenfield) added 14, 10, and 10 points respectively for a balanced Inferno scoring attack.
Alverno will continue Northern Athletics Conference play next Tuesday when they take on Benedictine University. Benedictine defeated Alverno 59-52 back on November 29 in Lisle, IL. Game time is slated for 7:00pm.
