Defense Keys Edgewood to Win

             Gabby Allen                          Alex Salisbury

(2/23/2008) – The Edgewood College women’s basketball team outlasted Alverno College, 58-43, in both team’s final game of the regular season.  The Eagles put their defense on display early, holding the Inferno to just two points in the first 10+ minutes of the contest, taking a 13-2 lead.

Alverno did its best to stay in the game with some aggressive defense of its own.  They held Edgewood (15-10, 12-6 in the Northern Athletics Conference) to only 25 points in the first half, and allowed Northern Athletics Conference scoring and rebound leader Megan Scheele to only 10 points and 2 rebounds for the game.  Those totals falling well short of Scheele’s averages of 21ppg and 11rpg.  Despite the ratcheting up of the defense, Alverno (5-20, 1-17 NAC) was unable to bring the game closer than 11 in the second half.

Lisa Sorgi (So., Milwaukee, WI / Greenfield) led Alverno with 14 points, while Gabby Allen (Fr., Milwaukee, WI / Bayview) added 12 points and 6 rebounds.  Alex Salisbury (Sr., St. Francis, WI / Thomas More), the lone senior on this year’s roster and playing in her last game in an Inferno uniform, scored  4 points and pulled down 5 rebounds in 39 minutes of work.

The game marked the end of Head Coach Brad Duckworth’s first campaign with the Inferno.  Their 5-20 overall record marks a 3 game improvement on wins from last season.  The Inferno’s 73-51win over MSOE on February 2nd was the first Northern Athletics Conference basketball victory in school history.  The win also led to forward Bre Miller (Jr., Racine, WI / Horlick) being named the Northern Athletics Conference “Student-Athlete of the Week” for women’s basketball, another first for the program.
