Inferno Lose Overtime Thriller, 71-69

Gabby Allen          Lisa Sorgi             Bre Miller

(2-13-08) -- The last time the Alverno College women's basketball team saw Dominican University, the Stars were walking off the Inferno's home court with a 68-48 win.  On Wednesday night, the Inferno came within :23 of returning the favor.  Clinging to a one-point lead in regulation, Joslyn Binkowski (Jr., Greenfield, WI / Greenfield High School) hit 1 of 2 free throws to put the Inferno up, 61-59.  A lay-up by the Stars' Jessica Salinas tied the game with :08 seconds remaining.  After a timeout, Alverno's Gabby Allen (Fr., Milwaukee, WI / Bayview) took the ball the length of the court and got off a layup but was called for a charge with :01 to go, sending the game into overtime.

The Inferno (5-18, 1-15 NAC) had their opportunities in overtime as well.  With 1:35 remaining, Alverno held a 67-65 lead. After that Alverno, who only used 6 players for the game, ran out of gas.  They were unable to score again until Allen hit a pair of full court lay-ups in the final 10 seconds.  But it was not enough as Dominican pulled out the 71-69 win.

The first half of the game was dominated by the home team as the Stars (7-16, 5-11 NAC) jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first 5 minutes.  Dominican led by as many as 8 in the half before settling for a 26-20 halftime lead. Much of the second half however belonged to the Inferno.  It took only 8 minutes into the second half for Alverno to complete a 13 point turnaround, turning a six point deficit into a seven point advantage, 41-34.

Allen, led a trio of Inferno scorers in double figures with 18.  Lisa Sorgi (So., Milwaukee, WI / Greenfield) chipped in 17, and Bre Miller (Jr., Racine, WI / Horlick) added 16.  Miller also dished out 6 assists.
