Free Throws Help Stars Shine

(1/30/2008) -- The Alverno College women’s basketball team outshot visiting Dominican University by 13 and forced 25 turnovers on Wednesday night.  What they could not do however was keep the Stars off the free throw line.  Dominican (5-14, 4-9 Northern Athletics Conference) shot 18 more free throws than the Inferno, made 19 more, and won  by 20, 68-48.

Stars’ sophomore guard Lisa Julkowski was a perfect 8-8 from the charity stripe on her way to a 23 point performance.  Teammate Jessica Salinas led all scorers in the game with 24.  She was 4-5 from the free throw line.  In all, 6 Dominican players stepped to the line, none of them missed more than one free throw.

For Alverno (4-14, 0-11 NAC), cold 2nd half shooting (9-29, 31%) quickly turned an 8 point halftime deficit into a double-digit hole from which they could not get out.  Lisa Sorgi (So., Milwaukee, WI / Greenfield) led the Inferno in scoring with 16 points, on 7-19 shooting from the floor.  Alverno was 2-7 from the free throw line for the game.

Alverno will continue Northern Athletics Conference play on Saturday, February 2, when they face MSOE.  It will be the final game of Alverno’s four-game home stand.  They are currently 1-2 in those games.  It will be the first and only meeting between the two teams this season.  Game time is set for 2:00pm.
