Alverno Victorious in Season Opener, 60-51

Bre Miller Lisa Sorgi Katie Salentine
In the end, it was the undersized team that prevailed over the undermanned one. The Alverno College women’s basketball team, jumped out to an early lead and never looked back on Friday night, cruising to a 60-51 season opening win over North Central (MN) University. The Inferno, with a roster of ten players all 5’9 or under, used their speed to blow past the Rams, who suited seven players and only played with five.
One of the five that played for North Central however, was 6’3 center Naomi Sanon. Sanon gave the Inferno fits in the half court, going off for 26 points and 13 rebounds. Alverno countered with a frenetic up-and-down the court pace, enabling them to score easy baskets on a tired Rams team that was slow in transition.
Lisa Sorgi (So., Milwaukee, WI) and Ambrial Miller (Jr., Racine, WI) led the Inferno scoring attack with 12 points each. 5’8 Kathlyn Salentine (So., Muskego, WI), who was assigned to the 6’3 Sanon for most of the night, led Alverno with 7 rebounds.
The game marks the first victory at Alverno for new head coach Brad Duckworth, who took over as Athletic Director / Women’s Basketball Head Coach in July 2007.
